Over the next 3-4 months and you will see a REQUEST in the next Mexican Numismatic Association Journal I am looking for examples to perform XRF analyses on these copper reales. Specifically KM #'s 17-20 the 1/2R to 4R's. Specifically at this point if you want to contribute to this study send me an E-Mail with photo of coins and I will get you specifics. At this point here is what I am looking for:

1. Non-slab pieces and for 1/2R & 1R just low grade pieces due to value but silvered.

2. XRF can not analyze through plastic so no slabs.

3. For 2R's 1840-1847 and 1848, 1851, 1852 & 1854.

4. For 4R's 1849 or 1850. Have the others ...

5. For 8R's none needed (KM#21 & 21A).

If you want to supply any specimens for this MNA Jorunal article contact me privately.

All specimens selected receive free XRF scans and will be included in article.

Purpose: Briefly - I don't believe these KM reported SILVER fine level values and this haphazard classification that some are copper and others are of a copper/lead alloy. This whole alloy classification needs a fresh new look and its just TOO CRYPTIC!

Specimens selected will be in my possession for 2-3 months - will explain why privately.

Thank you in advance to all participants.

I think I have a few 1, 2 and 4 reales pieces but I wonder where they are.

Does XRF damage the coin ?

Does it not have to vapourise some of the surface ?

If I sent them would you have to pay customs duty on receipt and would I have to pay customs duty to get them back ?

Pertinax see if you can locate them but obviously if I can find a U.S. source it would be better. At this point I am looking for pieces that have been silvered. This silvering on copper will appear like a whitish film or if heavily silvered the expected silvering color.

XRF does not damage the coin at all. So no rush. I will s compile contributors, wait for the Mexican Numismatic Association Journal request to be sent out to MNA members, etc. and then respond.

Take your time - I will do another request at the end of May and early June.

If you LOOK in KM you will see for example for the 2 Reales as you proceed from 1832 to 1854 the silver content listed goes from 0.33 to 0.04 for 1853 and 1854.

So looking for the early dates in 1/2, 1, 2 and 4R's.

My E-Mail starts with johnmenc so its listed on the Internet and you can contact me for further information also via this post.

I pay all expenses if specimens are sent from the U.K.. Obviously I am hoping for U.S. contacts but for high silvered 1/2R or 1R I may pull the trigger even for a U.K. shipment. I need to examine all contributors say 30-60 days after this request and the publication of the next MNA Journal.
