It's fairly common knowledge that these rolls are scams. But how much of a scam are they? See this roll? The coins inside have been untouched since June of 1922, when my great grandpa bought it from the bank with the intention of buying candy for my grandpa. That never ended up happening, and it sat in a desk in his bedroom until his death in 1941, before being passed down until now. Now, wasn't that such a touching story? Well, there's a further twist to it: None of it is true. My great grandpa wasn't from Pittsburgh, and he didn't die in 1941. I made this roll 30 minutes ago, using microsoft word and some old sketch paper, then sanding it to look old. It's too small to hold any U.S coin (that's how badly I made it). So, to anyone who is thinking of buying an "unsearched" roll from ebay, don't. They've nearly all been cherrypicked and almost none are legitimate. They cover it up with some sappy story of how they bought it from a dying collector in the 60's, or something else like that. I know the vast majority of forum members didn't need a lesson on this, but I thought it might be good to spread the word to newer members.

No matter how hard you try to convince people that these "unsearched rolls" are scams, some still believe there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. P T Barnum was 100% right regarding "there is a sucker born every minute". It's proven every day on ebay!

I don't collect modern coins, but I can guarantee you that almost every so called unsearched roll has been cherrypicked by a dozen collectors, and marketed as unsearched.

Most of those marked as "unsearched" by anyone with any conscious left, would at least say "by me" to make themselves at least feel better for not lying! I have sold both LWCs and LMCs with the caveat of searched by me ONLY FOR___________, usually that says "cuds, cracks and cruds" and I further state what I did search for which is the MAJOR DDO / DDR and RPMs, that which I personally consider a "True" mint error, all the rest are just machining errors (except those one-of-a-kinds), Then I say, "I've left these for YOU!"....and eventually it will sell.

I can admit that I bought 1 to 2 'unsearched' ebay rolls before I realized what I was really getting. It then led me to this website in search of better knowledge. So I would say it was worth the 20 to 30 dollar lesson learned.

It's a tale oft repeated. Every child needs to burn his fingers a time or two before he stops touching the pretty flames. Myself included.

The one that really cracks me up is an e-Bay listing of a 1955-P OBW roll of Lincoln Cents found in an estate sale , salted away for over 50 years . And the seller would say something like ,this is the year and mint of the famous 55-P DDO . Bidding starts at $100.

I too have fallen victim to this "unsearched" scam! However, I did luck out on an advertised "unsearched BU roll of 1970dLMC, 1970d, and 1972d all from the same seller. In the 1970d's, out of the 50 only 13 were not keepers! about 6 of them have a strong obverse die clash of the columns under Liberty as well as above and left of the date. There were several spike heads of which have now been attributed as well as white a few RIDB whic I have also had attributed. The other two rolls were not as plentiful but did produce several minor DDO's, 4 1970-S-WDDO-007, 1 1970-S-WDDO-010, 3 1970-S-WDDO-011 and two 1970-S-WDDO-024. That purchase of "unsearched rolls" was the only purchase that was truly "Unsearched" I made three or four more purchases that were scams and have not purchased anymore since. I consider it beginners luck! I got extremely lucky with those rolls even though what I got out of them do not have a high premium, it sure was fun finding what I found. If you know the seller and have had a good experiences and you trust him/her, you may be alright. I still wouldn't got for it.mif I knew then what I know now, I would never of bought them.

This subject has come up in numerous threads, and I am glad that we have come to a consensus that there is a vanishingly small chance that any coin rolls of mixed years are unsearched. If you think about it, it would be next to impossible to prove in any case.
Let us say that someone purchased a hoard of 1 cent coins, and let us say that this was accumulated by a proverbial hermit in the hills of Tennessee for 20 years, who died in 1968 and there is hard evidence that is really has not been touched in 50 years.
Even so, people had been saving 1 cent coins for years before that, so every coin the hermit hoarded may have been looked at by dozens or hundreds of people before that. How many rare dates were people pulling out of circulation in 1948-1968, when the hoard was being accumulated? Not very many I would suspect. And this is the best case scenario.
It is human nature to be lured by stories of buried treasure.
