I have quite a few of them, however they are all business strikes from Philly, not the proof ones from SanFran, which are the rare ones. :(

I actually "discovered" it back in 1990. I was buying five new proof sets a year from the mint($11. each back in those days) Got my sets, opened them, and found one set was missing the "S" on the penny. I wanted to keep it as low as a mintage as possible, so called the mint, hoping if there were any still there, they would destroy them and keep the mintage low. I talked with a few people there who assured me I didn't have what I said I had, but I'm sure they knew it existed as they offered to replace the set for another if I wasn't happy with it! I then contacted Alan Herbert at Numismatic News, told him what I had. We talked a few times, asked me to send him the set to document, but I was to hesitant to ship it out, not anything with him, but with USPS. He told me he thought there might be anywhere up to 2000 examples, but I think less than 200 are known. At the time, I asked him what he thought it could be worth over time. He said give it 10 years and it could fetch upwards of $10,000. Don't think it ever approached that though. He talked with another person who got one a few days later, and then it was a cover story in NN the following week. Its my claim to fame in coin history, lol

A bit of coin collectors luck I'd say. As the old saying goes (rather be lucky than good any day), LOL Nice find.

The US 2018 Coin Guide has this coin (if still in the original packaging) as part of the whole mint set listed with a value of $4,250 and if you were real lucky and purchased one of the Prestige sets the value would then be $4,750. Awesome!

crusherjc, congratulations! That's quite a story. Maybe someday I'll have a claim to numismatic fame. Do you still have it?

Pictures won't be available till Friday. (Need to go to safety deposit.) I got mine without a proof set. Bought a penny box a few months back and it was a collection dump of wheats and proof's and I got mine from that box. Sadly had some circulation PMD. :(
