This quarter came from a roll I serted in a till and rerolled that evening..so barely circulated I guess is what I am assuming. All I can say is that the rainbow effect is only on the obverse surface..nothing shows on the edge or reverse..At first I thought it must have gotten hot.. I will try some pics that show the rainbow...Also will include one of a pic taken from the top which shows what I call violent rays from the eye. If pics are not good please let me know I am just getting more aquainted with taking pics. thank you for any help. Edited by Occirats 05/01/2018 3:27 pm

@Occirats, first welcome to CCF. Second it seems that you are asking about the rainbow toning on the obv of this coin. I can see it very nicely from your first picture. There are some folks who collect (and pay a premium for) naturally toned coins, although I thought that this practice was generally restricted to silver. It strikes me as very odd that a clad coin only 1 year old could have already toned up without a little help. Perhaps someone was practicing on this coin to fine tune their results before moving on to more expensive coins (you can see where some other quarter was resting on top of this one at about 1 o'clock). Whatever the cause of the toning, this coin can be spent as it has no numismatic value above face value. On the other hand, save it if you want--the price is right and it is kinda interesting to look at.

Thank you, and from what I know the coin hasn't been anywhere outside the establishment I got it from which I frequent daily for the last 15 years so I thought it odd as well...I checked for another quarter being layed over the top and the diameter doesn't fit any coin I could tell...and there are no toning on the edge or reverse...and what about the xray vision? I recall seeing something similar with the xray eyes many years ago but at that time I really had no interest, its just I recalled it when I saw this. I don't think its a toning, it seems more like heating(not sure how people tone coins)and didn't know if that could be possible in the minting process.. guess i'll just hang on to it see if anything develops.
Thanks for the response

Quote: if that could be possible in the minting process.. Sorry, but I'm pretty doubtful that this coin left the mint with this toning (it is not a mint error). The X-ray vision or violet rays emanating from Washington's eyes are just the toning.

@Spence, I get It...
Strangest thing is that about 45 years ago there was big news in my area about the xray vision on, I think it was a nickel...The picture in the newspaper looked just like that and the hype was all about the big money it sold or was selling for...don't know how it all went down after that..

I collect toned coins. They are not mint errors. It happens naturally when the coin is exposed to the environment. Usually, it happens on gold or silver coins. This one is unusual, being relatively new and a clad quarter. I think it was someone practicing their artificial toning (AT) skills on some low value coins before doing a more expensive coin.

Silver is a noble metal as well. Gold coins sometimes acquire toning, usually bright orange in color. But toned gold is not as common as silver.
What I should've said was "Usually, it happens on silver coins, but it can happen on gold as well."

Coin storage can alter coin colors. If they are stored in an area that is not cooled, (Like here where the temps go 120 plus in the summer) if they are stored in a car port, the heat can be even hotter. They can cause a rainbow affect. If coins are left in the rolls too long, the edges of the coins that touch the paper can turn darker. Store in envelopes can turn coins. Some albums can turn coin a different color. (even the good albums can turn a BU coin) Coins left in mint set cellos for many years can turn colors. Coins can turn yellow if they are near an area with has a high sulfur content present. Artificial heat, adding other substances to a coin can alter a coin. Jewelry polish, acid products can turn cents pink. The best way to store coin to me is the 2X2's. I used to label them coins in 2X2s with a thermal printer and wrap the edges over into the 2X2. That also alters BU coins near the label. So now I just put the labels on the outside of the 2X2s. So many thing to not do with coins. You have to consider them all.

@SilverDollar2017,..I'm thinking it is heat generated rather than toning...It seems me that trying to artificially tone a coin with heat would be obvious..
But I don't know anything about artificial toning practices ...Then I saw that upsetting mill and my thought was that it was forced through to the mill..
I'm going to try and heat another quarter in graduated degrees and see what happens...and mic it's thicknesses best I can...
