Found this in a roll of quarters today. My first thought is that the quarter was encased in a ring for some type of jewelry. Now I'm not so sure. Your thoughts?

Early stage Dryer Coin or a spooned coin.

Thank's gents! It was just surprising to me how consistent and evenly cylindrical the rim is around the entire coin.

Altered rim. The rim has been rolled over, altered. Note where the reeds were? That shows it was a normal coin until un-normal Norman got a hold of it. Probably an attempt to create an error or to make a coin ring. so it is a return to the bank. It will not work in a vending machine. It would probably get stuck if it was able to get into the slot?

Yes, my exact thoughts. But this coin came out of a Loomis wrapped roll from a box I got from the bank. How did it get through the wrapping/rolling system?

Not a problem, the diameter is slightly smaller. So that wouldn't be an issue. Seems like it would have got caught in the counting machine. But larger coins go through them.
