Here's a 1905 1 Cent (5 Bit) issued for use in the Danish West Indies. A one year type, its mintage was exactly a half million. Why is it of any interest? In 1917, the United States bought the Caribbean colonial outpost from Denmark. Today we know this purchase as the U.S. Virgin Islands (including St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix).

Very interesting. Were there additional coins minted after 1905 but before the US acquisition?

Another 200K of this denomination with essentially the same design were struck in 1913.

That is an interesting and obscure coin @LC. Any idea why the denomination "BiT" has mixed upper and lower case letters?

None whatsoever. I believe it's merely a stylistic quirk.

I was fortunate to come across one of these in a random bucket, the 1915 version. It threw me off having 2 denominations and I lucked out with a seldom seen country.

Cool Find!
