That is die wear. Very common on the 1950s wheat cents as they over used them.

Looks more like damage too me on this one Coop, device was smashed/worn, the took a hit there. The total shape suggests downward pressure to "expand the width...?OPs coin shows a flat, shelf-like appearance(not of MD), not the graduated slope as is/seen on DDD as described.

Thanks coop. So when trying to discern between MD and DD, is there any kind of rule of thumb you look for? Like same height on double? What gets most confusing I think for me is like some of the lesser known 1965-68 ddos listed on varietyvista.com usually in the "GOD WE" areas that look more like MD than DDO.

Thanks E&V, DDD is easy to catch on the zinc LCs, it's these well defined DDD's that throw me for a loop

You're very welcome bamasoe! I agree that they're easier to catch on the Zinc Lincoln Cents than on the Copper Lincoln Cents.

Looks like DDD to me. Also known as a poor mans doubled die like the 1955. John1

I found one of these myself. thanks to this post it cleared it up. "LIBERTY" on my coin also had me wondering. I tried to take a front and back pic of the whole coin but had a hard time keeping it under the size limit.
