I bought a few "OBW" rolls of uncirculated 69 s Lincoln cents. In being extra careful not to damage them, I dropped the first one on the floor. That made me think: What would I do if I found an extremely rare DDO cent, with regards to safely storing the coin until I sent it off? I would probably give it an acetone dip and put it in a round plastic holder, but I'm honestly not sure if that's the right thing. Just looking for for some good advice on maintaining the integrity and preserving the finish of a coin until it gets graded. Thanks Mitch

I would leave it alone. A valuable coin you don't tamper with. Take them as they are. Doing the wrong thing can reduce the sometimes as much as 90%. Leave them as they are. If you found one that rare, I would have it graded/slabbed. But the chances of finding these are very slim. Probably less than 100 coins are known. (probably much less than that, but I like to give a little hope) Keep in mind that there are many machine doubled examples on the 1968-1972 cents. So if you see something on the date, look at the motto before you get excited. In order for it to be from this die, all doubling must match. There is another DDO for this year, but it is minor: Harder to spot, but probably more often missed. (I've never found one either)

Coop, when you say "leave it alone", do you mean just put it in one of those hard plastic round holders as is, without the acetone?
Thanks.

Don't attempt to alter the coin. Keep it in a 2X2. Don't use anything on it. You could reduce the value doing anything with it. Keep it safe as it is.

Excellent advice. Acetone has its place but any valuable coin should be left as is until you can show us some photos

Well, after I changed my underwear I would contact PCGS and find out the proper way they want me to store and send it to them. John1

If I was going to keep it, I would post pics on CCF for the CCF Family to enjoy. I then would probably buy or make one of those nice, 2X2 square an air tight plexi case for it and store it.
I have used acetone on LCMs before with no adverse affects, and so likely would give it a quick dip before putting it in the holder.
If I was going to sell it, since the going trend to maximize profits is slabbing and CAC, I would probably play the game and do so. Although I likely would contact Tommy Bolack (know him from the insulator hobby) who collects coins of this calber to see if he wanted to buy it first.

Thanks for the advice. CCF would be the first stop without a doubt. I love reading the old topics when people find 72 DDO's or 82 DDR's it awesome reading what all the contributors that are still active today said when people make amazing finds. I can't thank everyone on here enough for all the things I've learned over the years.

Toss it in the box over in the corner where I throw all the coins I get that don't fit in with what I actually collect.
