I believe this very worn coin to be a LIBERTY CAP ONE CENT (1793-1796)...If you look at the top of the first pic you can see the AM for America and also part of the word CENT..On the second pic you can see the "L" for liberty by my thumb...I cant read the date...what do you think Edited by Sap 06/21/2008 06:01 am

I agree, an early US cent. The only other option might have been revolutionary France, by "AM" doesn't appear in "Republique Francaise".

On page 95 of the " Red Book 2009" it shows a picture of a 1793 Liberty Cap, which, although yours is beat, you can match the two up perfectly. It should weigh 13.48 grams.

Are you sure that is a large cent? It sure looks to me like a 1797 1/1 Half Cent. The head is too high, and too small for a large cent. The AM is way to small for a large cent, and the kicker is you can very clearly see the lowest wave of hair and it appears to have a very clear 1 right there almost touching the hair wave just before it curves up to join the bust. Right where it should be for the 1 over 1 Half Cent.

The wreath doesn't match up to any 1 cent with the same bust. After I compared the leaves and berries to that of a detailed one...it matches. Any way to measure the diameter to finalize the conclusion?

I know my 18th century coins, and thats definitely a Flowing Hair quarter or half dollar from either 1794 or 95. Did you find that one metal detecting or something? -PP

It must be a half dollar considering no quarters where made with the flowing hair design. -PP

looking at the outline of the bust it could be the 1795 Jefferson head large cent. -PP

I see little hope of identification if the guys here can't even agree on whether it is copper or silver, lol.

Pennypusher, did you read my earlier comments? And since you know your 18th century coins so well, Which ones have the word cent in the middle of the reverse design and what flowing hair design has a Liberty cap and pole? (pole visible above the end of the bust.) :) Come on folks, grab your Redbooks, flip to the Half Cents and look at the picture of the 1797 1 over 1, then look at the picture of the obv and tell me if that isn't the upper 1 there by the lock of thehair.
