Not the prettiest cast Æ trias I have ever seen
But as usual ....... the price was right !
And it was time for something completely different

Believed by some scholars to be the first bronze coin issue used to replace early Greek silver fractions

Akragas Sicily
Æ Cast Tetras
Circa 450 BC
Tooth shaped with eagle standing left / Crab
four pellets on base (obscured)
15.36 grams 19mm x 19mm x 13mm
Sear 1020

The images are actually upside down
But in this case it doesn't really matter all that much !

You got that right...I never saw one on this board - or perhaps any other board - that I can recall.

I tried looking for the eagle and crab, but it started to give me a headache, and so I gave up. I'll take your word for it.

Great pickup. Thanks for sharing - a real treat.

Man, I learn something every time I peruse. I would have thought that to be a buried spent .38 caliber.

Thanks for posting - really cool!

Yes weird--I've never even heard of such a thing. Is it sorta like a Aes Rude?

I am no expert on these sort of 'thangs'
But as mentioned above they are considered the original bronze "coin".
An Aes Rude would be the Roman equivalent.
Some are much clearer and have enough detail to clearly see the crab and eagle as well as the 4 pellets on the base.
But they tend to be priced beyond anything I would want to pay !
So I will settle for this one

And I agree
I would have thought it some type of bullet used by the Romans and Greeks but for the fact it is bronze and not lead
