I was pleased to win this big hunk of silver dating back to 92-88 BC. It is a Cistophorus or Tet of Mysia Greece. More about a similar coin can be found in this very good thread by our own @numisart:

One nice aspect of this particular piece is the pretty long line of provenance that has been preserved, including an entombment by NCG. It is attributed as SNG Aulock 7476.

Excellent pickup, Dave. Those entwined serpents are fantastic. Nice broad flan too - what size?

Dave this has to be one of the nicest one of these I've seem. I been wanting one for sometime but they have a ways been out of my price range. Congrats.

Excellent piece.
Most probably used as a store of wealth, and never saw circulation. Perhaps one in a large hoard.

Mine is of a much lower value, due to lower grade.

Great coin so long as you're not ophidiophobic.

Are there in fact any documented hoards in which these were found?

Thanks guys. I'm trying very hard to buy better condition coins as I wade into Ancient Greece. This is a fairly new tactic for me and is definitely limiting the number of purchases that I'm making. Still, I'm pretty happy with the results so far. And as far as snakes on coins (or coins on snakes) goes, I love 'em!
