One of my estate sale contacts offered me 3 coins. These came from a collection that was put together between 1960-80. Way outside my wheelhouse so I'm looking for any and all info but especially authenticity opinions. Both of these weigh in at 26.3 grams and are 39mm diameter. With that weight I'm leaning towards counterfeit.

Have you ever weighed really worn Barber halves or similar?

It's been quite a while. My memory isn't what it used to be but I can't remember one being .7 grams light.

By the edges they look not genuine.
The first edge looks like some of the 0 s (zeros) in the engrailing are "squared" instead of completely round. They should be completely round from other posts in this forum.

The second edge just looks way off too because look at the 0 s in the middle of the picture compared to each other. One is way taller than the other. Should be uniform.

I agree about the weight issue. That low could certainly be because of wear.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a close look at the edge details. I don't know anything about these and am mostly trying to verify that they don't have numismatic value before I acid test one for silver content.

I agree with 20021sc,
Both of these plus the 1811 you posted
earlier all appear to be not genuine.

Edit-
To avoid a discussion on contemporary counterfeits
vs counterfeits, I changed the wording to not genuine.

I'm also curious about when these might have been made. Based on the time period that the collection was assembled I believe they are at least 30 years old.

I did a specific gravity test this morning. Unfortunately my scale only measures in tenths of a gram instead of hundredths. Due to that I had to make several calculations and was only able to come up with a range instead of a definitive number. The coins themselves weighed 26.3 or 26.5 grams and the "wet weight" was consistently 2.7 grams. Assuming my scale could be off by as much as .05 gram in either direction the range I came up with was 9.55-10.01. Not extremely helpful but does indicate the silver content of the coin is well below what it should be.

Sounds like contemporary counterfeits and you need more experienced people on this forum to chime in. maybe German silver based on your latest statements, but more knowledgeable members need to answer.
