Is it unusual to find a nickel with very light date from a Grease Filled Die strike? My first impression was the date is missing but you can see it is very faint.

Not unusual. Your coin has a strong Rim and Jeff's profile. It is a Greaser.

Yes very nice example of a grease-filled die. It is my understanding that you really need to have whole portions of a design element missing before there is much of a premium.

Whenever I see a Greaser, I immediately check real close for die clashes, both sides.

Lionel90, your coin is a Greaser, but it's not enough to have a premium, since letters actually have to be missing. Crazyb0, how come you check both side on a Greaser for a Die Clash? Just wondering.

Quite often the reason for a " Grease Fill" is the need to clear off a clash. Both the dies may have been affected and not just replaced off-hand and reused. Any combination is possible. It is the repair or replace method which all depends on just how many working dies they have, and the tech's attitude taht day! LOL! (Lazy, etc).

For instance, take the reverse Memorial clash with the Y in the bay, that may have been missed when they repaired the dies and the "grease" is the result of some polishing compounds and lubricants from the process you notice on the IGWT. Grease is there for a reason, clashes, die alignment tests and general maintenance.

Also if it is damage, it will bulge out on the opposite side. So seeing both sides will give us more of an idea, what was going on with the die, or with the coin.
