Is this mint mark typical for a 1944 penny? The S seems extra thick to me in comparison similar coins.

With this amount of wear and tear, it rather looks to me like the mintmark took a hit that smeared it. The upper left hand corner of the S seems to be much less raised above the surface of the field.

Thank you for your response. That must have been one heck of a hit the coin took in that tiny little specific spot to smear it out that much. Ouch! (hehe)

I agree that it seems like a million to one shot, but we see so many unusual pieces (like yours) each week. If you hang out for a whle, I'm sure you'll see other interesting PMD.

The doubling is usually seen in the thick curves(upper lower) and the serifs. With coins damaged as this it is nigh impossible to attribute unless there are clear OBVERSE die markers, which is highly unlikely here. not worth the time and effort, believe me unless it is that $1000 possibility, which one of these is about a buck. I collect RPMs, one like this has already left the building in a resold lot!

Grahama, I don't think I've seen seen one that mashed in such an isolated spot, but it happens. Looks like whatever got it may have also got the nose of that 4 as well?

Heavy coin contact flattened the MM. it is a coin issue, not a die issue.

It's Post Strike Damage (happened after it left the U.S. Mint). You can see the pushed over and flattened metal.
