Hi. Can anyone help identify these coins. I have a few of them, and I'm stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

Yep

Depending on the date there are 3 types of these coins. They started mintage in 1959 and have kept the same design so far

The coin on the right is a Heisei 9 which puts it to 1997.

Was the ribbon from the mint? Or put on after. I have 10 or 12, they all have the same ribbon and tied the same.

mikep- it is doubtful that the ribbons were put on at the mint unless it was some sort of promotion. There has been a long tradition of using lower demonination coins which have a hole in the center, such as older cash coins, for decorative purposes.

It's nothing more than decoration sold to tourists. Or there might be some kind of promotion such as aids awareness or whatever it can be.

I googled "5 yen" tied ribbon. Apparently there's a good luck ritual: toss a bunch of coins with ribbons tied to them to the crowd. If you catch one, you'll be lucky.

That explains why I've been finding so many nice coins from circulation. Good luck for once!

Thanks
