Europe-Taler---World's-Largest-Silver-Coin---Austrian-Mint
Europe Taler - World's Largest Silver Coin from The Austrian Mint

Canada may have the largest Gold coin, but the Austrian Mint has just released the Worlds Largest Silver Coin, the Europe Talar. Weighing in at 20.08 kg (aprox. 44 lbs.), and with a diameter of 36 cm (14 inches); it is big!

The obverse of the taler features a classic look and corresponds to the time of Maximilian in 1508. It shows the newly crowned emperor mounted in armour on a horse; in his hand he holds a banner with the imperial symbol, the double eagle.

The reverse has a more contemporary look and depicts a montage of famous Europeans including religious icon Martin Luther, and continuing with composer Antonio Vivaldi, inventor James Watt and Nobel Peace prize winner Bertha von Suttner.

The Europe Talar will be limited to Special Orders. Prices have not been announced yet.

However, Region Hall-Wattens and the Austrain Mint have set up a website for additional information on the Europe Talar in addition to offering a collectors version of the coin, weighing in a at 120 grams of fine silver with a diameter of 6cm. The collectors coins will cost € 108.- + VAT.

Visit the website at http://www.europataler.at

This new site also provides some background on the Europe Talar.

The design of the coin and the realization of the coin images originate from the medallion maker Herbert Wähner, who is also very well-known in expert circles. The packaging of the "silver giant" will be produced by the Hall master wood turner Werner Nuding from 500-year old wood from Castle Hasegg, which was unearthed during renovations in 2007.

20.08 kilos? I suppose this may be the last record coin I can carry all by myself... as for storage, any ideas there? I have not yet seen an album fit for something like this, but maybe it comes in a specially designed box?

What does "-+ VAT" mean?

cause if it means "add the melt value of silver" then it would make sense. If not then there is only about 10 oz of silver in it

VAT is Value Added Tax. So if an EU resident buys the piece, s/he pays the €108 plus the tax. By the way, contrary to what has been written in quite a few US forums, this Europataler is not a coin but a medal.

The VAT (Value Added Tax) is the local equivalent of sales tax. It is not charged on exports to outside the EU.

The €108 (plus VAT) pricetag is for one of the smaller copies, with only 120 grams of silver - that's 3.86 troy ounces. They've only made the one giant one, just to break the record, and don't seem to want to make any more. The small ones have a mintage limit of 2,008 pieces.

As for storage of giant coins, I like what someone said about the giant Canadian gold coin: just leave it sitting there on the coffee table. Any thief will do their back in trying to hoist it.

The Austrian Mint made five of the big ones, and one of those will stay at the mint museum http://www.muenze-hall.at in Hall. So far I have not found any info on how much they charge(d) for one of those.

This is the original, so to say, that the Europataler was designed after ...

... a Doppelguldiner from 1508. The side with the emperor on the horse is basically the same (except the medal has the 1508-2008 dates). On the other side, the inscription was kept - this was the first piece that referred to "Europe" - but the coats of arms were replaced by the Europeans and the map that you see in the first post.
