Lucky you! It's not Post Strike Damage. It's a Struck Through error. Very nice find and congratulations!

@antmark3d, I think that @coop might have been asking if this coin was damaged rather than being struck through. Could you please post an overall pic of the front of this coin too?

Ok normally, copper cents that have suffered some road rash have areas where the brown patina has been abraded (along with some of the metal) thereby showing brighter metal. Of course, the time spent in a parking lot could have been some time ago and the coin toned since that damage.
I'm interested to hear more about what @coop is thinking because this sure looks like struck through to me. If so, it is a decent-sized area and probably worth saving in a 2x2.

my first thought was zinc rot. I know the coloring kind of gives the impression it's not but it also has some pretty dark patina for one of the newer shields. Can that happen from being left outside? I've never seen a strike through damage a penny like that. Maybe there was some moisture trapped between the zinc and coating and it just slowly ate away underneath the copper. You can actually see some little bubbles in certain areas like by the date and there is one pretty close to the affected area on the bottom left of the shield.

Waynoah83, yeah, sometimes if coins are left outside, they can start to develop dark toning.

Quote: they can start to develop dark toning. They will. Put one with mint luster outside in the sun for a day or two and see what happens.

With it being recessed with the shape that it is as well as some other recessed marks on the reverse I think maybe PMD. Here's why, the spot appears really rough in it texture kinda like what Mr. Coop was saying about a parking lot cent. Even though the zinc is not showing through that may have been due to the fact the copper plating was not punctured preventing zinc rot. I'm no expert, just my opinion. I hope I'm wrong and it's worth $100.00!
