Wanting to know if there is a tolerance on the 3.11 grams. I weighed one of my 1969s at work in the QA lab and came up with 3.175147 . Is that within a tolerance it may have? Thanks

I believe it's .13g +/-

Correct +/- .13 grams, same tolerance for the zinc cents as well.

Keep in mind it is a "recommended" tolerance, not sealed in stone. Many factors can affect a coin from wear, abuse, and stock plate thicknesses

If a coin reads 2.8g it may be minutely under thickness, and even on the heavier side. This is quite normal, don't lose your nut(scrat)!

Conder101, curious did it change for zinc cents?

+/- .13 grams, (1873 - 1982) same tolerance for the 1943 zinc-plated steel cents.

+/- .10 grams, (1982 - present) for copper-plated zinc.

Thanks, Doug.

You're correct I should have double checked the references. The zinc cent is .10 grams.

And Crazy those "recommended" tolerances are for MS coins. Coins that have been worn could be out of tolerance, but a MS coin SHOULD be within the tolerance range. If it isn't technically it is an error, but it has to be SIGNIFICANTLY out of tolerance to have an premium value. For a cent I would think something like .4 grams or more out of tolerance before it would have any real value.
