All day long reading books and analysing every single detail... I cant say for sure yet if this is a good fake or a real coin, it is one of the first type of coins "imitated" by the visigoths I think it represents the emperor justinus I... It looks real but I havent found an authentic coin completly equal to this one (they are all diferent, small details but all diferent) the coin seems to have age given the color, its real gold given it weighs 1.5g and the normal weight for those coins is 1.52g. Your opinion is welcome :) (Trying to read the inscriptions goes nowere trust me...)

Gut feeling is the flan doesn't look right. I don't know anything about this type so it's just a guess.

I will second the opinion ! But I also know nothing about this type. Coincidentally I purchased my very first Ostrogothic coin and it arrived today. The seller had described it as "Late Roman AE Monogram". Somehow I recognized it as being a "post" Roman monogram and was able to research it. But gold scares me too much !

The legend on the reverse is : DN IUSTNIANUS AUG , for Iustinianus ( 527-565) , on the reverse , the legend has no sense . It represents Victoria advancing right , holding a wreath and a palm branch .Below Victoria is written CONOB , then clockwise : VICTU?I head I O ? VA. There are Visigotic coins of Iustinianus with the legend VICTORI AGVA , VICTOTIA ACUSTORUA ....A bad inscription with no sense is not abnormal for this coins . Real or fake ? It is very difficult to decide with only a picture . The weight is correct for a tremissis, but what about the colour of gold , on the picture it is more grey than yellow . How is it in the hand ? Where did you buy the coin ? A reputated dealer ( why not a correct attribution?) , on ebay or elsewhere ? As it is an expensive coin , the reputation of the seller is very important to be quiet.albert

Hello, thank you for replying to my post about, the coin is not mine, it was up for action a while ago. I've recently taken interest in visigothic coins, read a huge book about them and got my hands in every article I could... I would like to get one for my collection but they are quite rare, and the ones I find are almost impossible to determine if they are fake or not, the inscriptions helps a lot, but not always. The sellers on ebay have good reputation, some have +1000 positive reviews and 1 negative saying they got a fake... I just dont know what to believe. Any advice would help :) thanks, Daniel I'll send more coin examples One reads : TARRANCOSPIVS / I.N.D WWITTIZA REX The other : RECCESVIN (th)VSRE / C (I dont know)SVIN(th)VSREX

Definitely avoid ebay at all costs Leave dealing with those 'scoundrels' to me ! The very day you posted my very first Ostrogothic coin had arrived that very morning. The ebay seller had listed it as an LRB monogram type. Somehow I recognized it ! Perhaps it was because one of the few references I found turned out to be rather close to home. http://goccf.com/t/144712FELIX RAVENNA Municipal coinage AD 526-40 It would seem I wasn't the only one to notice it or I might have walked away with it on the cheap ! But more to the point ........ I believe ebay is the wrong place to look for such an item as you are seeking. ebay is for "bargain hounds" and gold coins are usually for people with money to burn. To mix the desire for a gold coin with the desire for a fantastic price is a recipe for disappointment. I think you should be shopping on Vcoins or a Vcoins affiliated ebay seller. There are a few reliable ones And beware of bargains !!!

@DanielGu, I've been following this thread now for a couple days and am sad to see that your hard work in collecting these coins may be for nothing. I'm hoping that you can get at least some of your money back on the fakes. In your research, have you looked at Demo's book, "Ostrogothic Coinage from Collections in Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia & Herzegovina"? My collection of these coins is much more modest, but this is my resource book.

I haven't bought any gold coin on ebay yet, the visigoth coins in "VCoins" are the only ones I liked, and knew for sure were authentic (they have a Shop on ebay). I have only read "marks of power". Being portuguese is mainly the reason why I want a visigothic coin so bad, the visigoths named a land portucale and later in the reconquista it became portugal, they were the start. But since my wallet does not yet reach 700€ i'll probably buy uncleaned roman coins, clean them and resell, I have never bought uncleaned coins (on ebay), if you have point me a good seller :) , thanks for all the help

Very nice Ravenna coin with a superb reverse :a monogram with all the letters of the name Ravenna: at left R , below R an A , then a V from the R to the left side of the E ,an N from the R : lower part of the R and left side of the E , and at last a E . This monogram makes me thinking at the monogram of Theodoric on the Gepid's coins . albert
