I saw an ad for a 1996 mint set from Littleton Coin Co. for $50.00 plus 6.95 shipping for a 1996 mint set. Then I checked ebay and found I can get all I want for 10 to 20 dollars max. All are 11 coin sets. Any ideas why the big difference in price or is Littleton just overcharging hoping to get unknowing people to overspend. Moderators, I meant to post this in the U.S. Modern Coin forum. If you can move this it will be appreciated. Edited by DeputyMax 06/07/2018 01:01 am

Most 90's sets sell for $5-$7... The 96 has a West Point mint dime and they go for $18-$20 from what I've seen.

The Littleton price is ridiculous. As you noted, you can get complete sets on ebay for under $20. I would suggest avoiding Littleton altogether.

Littleton is way overpriced looking for an unknowledgeable person. The ebay prices may be a little low. You have to be careful with the 96 sets because the 96 W dime, which is most of the value of the set, is in in it's own separate pliofilm packet and some people will pull the 96 W out and still sell the rest as a 96 mint set. People get the set and see all the regular coins there and think they have the whole set.

Quote: Littleton is way overpriced looking for an unknowledgeable person. True. I bought a bunch of Presidential dollars from them at a little less than face (special promotion); later they sent me 2 bullion ASEs and wanted to charge me $45 each. I immediately chucked those in the return envelope. I'm curious as to what they'll send me next. Their prices are stupid, but, they are a business (somehow), and have to cover costs: Shipping facility, shipping fees, print catalogs, salaries, utilities, taxes, etc. All that adds up to you should buy from the Mint directly if possible or ebay if not (and some would advise to skip the mint altogether for most things, especially mint sets).

Littleton is a marketing gimmick, one after another. They advertise big league, have "promotions" like Coin a month", return if you don't like THEM!...only to find out YOURE responsible for return shipping(unless you complain LOUDLY). This was one of two "outfits" I began "recollecting" thru...even after cancelling, three letters, two phone calls, they finally stopped sending their stupid wares. NEVER sign up for a Littleton "promotional sale!"
BTW, just won a 1920D Merc dime in Littleton packaging, marked as $5.95 for $1.25...some poor sucker took a loss!

Congrats Crazyb0! I wasn't looking to buy any mint sets, I just happened to stumble across the ad and thought, hmm, something doesn't seem right here. Never thought about buying anything from Littleton either. On a side note, I just got an idea. I think I'll keep an envelope with all the crazy and ridiculous coin and currency ads I find with my collection just to show people what to avoid and to give myself a little chuckle.

Once you have notified them of cancellation, in writing (and use a signature request so you have proof they received it) anything they send you after that is unsolicited merchandise and may be considered to be a gift. They don't have to be paid for or returned.

The Coin Vault on TV always uses Littleton for their price comparisons. They don't use them by name, but they use their ridiculous prices to show that they are giving you the deal of a lifetime

Say what you want about them, but I filled many holes with their approval service in the early 1980s. Back then going to a coin shop have been a day trip, not an easy task when you are in junior high.
