Not a stupid question at all! We are all here to learn.
Quote:You also need to ask yourself why you want it graded to begin with.
If you like slabbed coins just b/c you like slabbed coins, then go ahead and pay to get it graded.
But don't get caught up in the false idea that seems to be growing that ALL coins that are worth something NEED to be slabbed. Realize grading is simply an option where you pay someone else to say what they think the grade is.
If you want to sell a better coin, the having it slabbed will bring a higher return to you from selling it on
ebay etc., b/c there are a lot of people who don't know to heed the wisdom mentioned over and over on this forum: Buy the coin, not the slab.
Remember each
TPG has their own set of graders who are trained to grade coins the way that company has designed to be used. Hence the different companies will not necessarily give the same results to the same coin. Its all very subjective. And if you break a coin out of a slab and resubmit it, even if you resubmit that coin to the same company, you are never guaranteed to get the same grade again.
So before you pay the money - take all this and the fees into consideration.
If you like slabs - they do look nice - go for it. If not, save your money for more coins instead of plastic with an affixed label. Another good thing to do is learn how the systems grade so you can get an idea for yourself. Even a former president of PCGS, Ron Guth, has made comments that grading can be learned, and its all about experience.
