Well here is one way to learn. When you look at the posts from the very first one that comes up, stop at the first post and examine what you are looking at. Don't look down. Just see what you feel it is. write down your idea on a pad that's handy. Then after you think, you have it figured out, then others through others post to see what they say. Examine the plus and minus of each comment, then see how the discussion goes. Rather than giving my yes or no answer, I tell what I see on the coin. If I see the answer is correct, then I go on. But if I see something that is missed, then I chime in. But keep in mind I've been doing this for over 20 years. It take s time to know what you are looking at. You'll never know it all. It takes time. Go back through my threads on CoopHome and see if you are missing some pieces of the puzzle. Several subject are covered with the threads and comments linked to those threads.

with coop. That's pretty much how I've been learning. I stop at the OP's question and image and I try to answer it myself. After thinking about it I scroll down and see how I did. Getting better. Still confused on types of doubling but I know I'll get there. A huge thank you to E&V for his giveaway. Soon I'll have a doubled die in hand to examine. I think that will help straighten out my thoughts a little.

I agree with Coop and chafemasterj. I am not one of the experts of the Modern Coins forum like coop, John1, E&V, Crazyb0, and others, but I try to help out in the modern coins forum. Usually I look at the image the OP has posted and answer the question myself. If one of the experts have answered before me, I'll see what they think. If their opinion is different than mine, I try to understand the logic behind their opinion and see if mine is wrong. I always enjoy learning and helping others in the Modern Coins forum.

That's okay. I was confused a little bit at first, but now I know and I get your point.

You're very welcome! It should help you out a lot on what to look for. Maybe the next time, when I do another giveaway, I should have newer members join in and have other members that missed out join in as well.

We are getting more all the time. I've seen over 100 threads in a day. When I start answering, the new posts come in or new responses from the old posts. It makes it hard to get to the bottom of the page. The other spots on the site are not this busy. But it helps me keep my gray matter in order.
Rest in Peace

I've never had a personal interest in varieties nor errors.

You guys have done such a magnificent job of explaining and demonstrating those topics that I've picked up a few pointers nearly by accident.

Because of you, I received the two Cherry picker books earlier this week. I've already been snooping through my collection with those books in hand.

A conversation to the dark side for sure

I'm right there with you Bate. Like I mentioned prior the different types of doubling confuses me too. We'll get there. You have TONS more hands on experience than me. Almost everything I've learned is from the Forum.

I guess "cause" and "affect" is probably how my brain operates.
(1)What could cause this? (
2) How would that affect it?
Probably the first two questions that go through my mind.
(3)If something is incuse on raised devices. It is probably damage or contact from something.
(4) Think what a die would create. Incuse on the die = raised on the coin. Raised on the die = incuse on the coin.
(5) Keep in mind that every thing wears. So did something change in shape? Breakdown? or altered PSD.

I find it helpful to have a few actual varieties and error certified coins when I started collecting, buy some inexpensive coins for reference, better than pictures.

It just takes time is all.. It helps knowing the minting process, as in what can go wrong where, and having a working knowledge of the errors and varieties already out there -- which take time to learn and understand.. Simple..
