Found this while closing the drawer at work. It drew my attention as I've never seen a coin look worn this way. To clarify, its not oxidization; its chipped away and appears to have some burn-type marks but the erosion/corrosion isn't consistent with burning the penny. The back is also flipped. Any info or testing would be greatly appreciated!

to CCF. It is a 2005. It has damage, not a variety or error. Might be some kind of acid. John1

@John1, it doesn't appear to be consistent with acid; watched a bunch of videos of people doing experiments and no luck. If youre able to look closely it is most definitely formed in a 9 consistent with 9's on other pennies

It's Post Strike Damage (happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It's not an error. Just a damaged coin. The "9" you see is just pushed over and flattened metal.
Errers and Varietys.

It's zinc corrosion, plain and simple. Spend it if you can. But

that it's probably a 2005 with extensive zinc rot and some very lucky hits. Still could be a nice conversation piece, assuming you can keep it from rotting too much further (which, sadly, is probably impossible).

Yes the copper plating now has lots of holes and the underlying zinc is deteriorating. Good to spend!

Do you really think it's from the future?
They stopped that design in 2008.
It's just a corroded 2005 Cent.

Looks like metal in the second 0 of a 2005 cent was perfectly displaced by a hit to create a 9. What are the odds!

That damage is due to the fact it came from a worm hole from the future and it came down really fast and hit the earth like a bullet. Just so you know ;)
