Poll Question
As many of you are aware, probably my greatest passion and numismatic pursuit within this hobby has been building, curating, and analyzing a collection of Indian imitations of Sassanian Peroz drachms; collectively called "Indo Sassanian" coins, AKA Gadhaiya Paisa, or Dramma. To date, the series has only received one in-depth treatment (Imitations in Continuity by K.K. Maheshwari) as well as receiving cursory treatment by Mitchiner, Deyell, and others.

Rather than one meandering thread, this time around I hope to create a series of threads that can grow and evolve as I add to my collection (nearing 300 now!). I have the foundation laid out in a series of notepad documents, and have begun the laborious process of imaging, measuring, and analyzing each coin in depth. Each step forward leads to one step back as new finds shatter my assumptions and drive me into a deep existential crisis.

I have the coins grouped as such:

1. Track - A linear development of directly related coins
2. Series - Coins that share a specific set of features and are thus related at least to some degree
3. Sub-Series - Coins within a narrow set of stylistic parameters
4. Variety - Ony used when a sub-series can be further broken down by an unambiguous feature; e.g. an inscription or symbol

Coins will be numbered within each sub-series or variety, at first showing what I believe to be a progression, then in the order I get them. E.g. my avatar would be 1.3.2 Coin 2 (Gadhaiya track, Curved head series, "Fancy style" sub-series, second in progression.)

There will be three tracks, at least 17 series, and probably 50-ish sub-series.

I really want to get things moving, but I am not sure how best to proceed as I don't want to consume this forum with 50+ threads. So, I created a poll to see which option you would all like to see (although I suppose Ron and Bobby would have veto power). Would you rather a few threads, perhaps harder to follow, or more threads to keep the same coins together? I hope to get moving again soon at any rate, aiming for a coin or two per day (time permitting) until I'm done!

Anyway, without further ado, here is a new face for you all to ponder over!

Wow!, that's amazing that you have 300 coins from this one type. You have and excellent reference work in the making. You might want to give some thought into put the whole series into a PDF book and having it posted here. It would than be available for download to everyone. Similar to what I did with my unedited little general reference. Any way you decide to do it is fine by me as long as we are able to have the information. Looking forward to seeing what you pujt together.

My initial thoughts, Steve, prior to casting a vote:

1. Great! Glad to see a revisit and expansion of you earlier work in this area. The earlier incarnation, prior to the great Photobucket disaster of '17, was one of my favorites.

2. Seventeen series would still amount to a lot of threads. Is there any way you could reduce it to three threads, one per track? Or would that not work based on the amount of content within each?

3. The reality may be that the best formats for this research might be a standalone website with multiple subsections, or an article. (I have a lead on a venue for that last one, if interested...if so, PM me). Of course the postings here at CCF could serve as the precursor to that. Edit: Ron's suggestion for a .pdf is an excellent option.

4. Will you be adding to your collection as you go? If so, what will you do with a new acquisition that would have fit well into an earlier (already posted) chronology for a series or sub-series? Would the edit function suffice for those situations?

B.

I agree with whatever Ron says to make this happen!

Thanks for the insights.

I actually did create a website to host the coins, but halfway through designing it, I realized I didn't like the layout and scrapped it. I am hoping to use my threads on here as a living/working draft, and will also make an index thread (like the Women of Rome series) to allow easier navigation.

I am leaning toward one thread per sub-series to keep the discussion focused, although some series I either don't have many of, or even any at all! Those would be a single thread per series. In my last thread, I had people at the beginning asking questions about coins I hadn't posted yet, and near the end I added a good 15 coins to my series 1, and didn't know how to present them.

Although I intend to present as many coins from all three tracks as possible, my primary focus has and will continue to be on the Gadhaiya track, which is woefully under-studied even by Maheshwari because there are no legends or symbols by which to categorize the coins. The coins exist on a stylistic gradient that is not as easy to categorize as I had hoped!

As you note, the understanding of this this series in flux. Fewer threads might make it easier to circle back, revise and create something of a cohesive whole as new finds are made and new thoughts are published. I've always had an interest in these coins as tangential to the main Hunnic series, which I collected with some seriousness once upon a time. Looking forward to whatever you choose to present!

FWIW I think that it would be better with more organization, even if that means more threads.
