What is the giveaway to distinguish a proof from a business strike on this particular coin.
I'm preferring to not post a pick because there are too many opinions & jealousy that I see on a daily basis reading the forums or people that just have bad character. But there are also many very informative & helpful people too. I'm looking for information & I will make my own conclusion on my coin. Thanks-

I know they made proof Half Cents in 1850 and 1852, but I honestly don't think they made any in 1851.

First, your comment about the members at CCF being jealous about the coins posted is inappropriate. There were no known proof sets for 1851. Some 1851 Half Cents have been called a proof from the business strike dies by Walter Breen. Breen had been know to fabricate information to meet his needs.

PCGS has graded 2 of them so that should be an answer for you without having to worry about jealousy as you call it or posting pictures

Yeah, you should send it to PCGS. I'm sure they'll get it right. They are the professionals....

Slider23, you must be very naive to believe my comment is unfounded & in my humble opinion it's far from inappropriate. I've spent a good portion of my life understanding human behavior. Not only mental behavior but physical behavior.
I joined this forum not so long ago in order to meet knowledgeable people with more experience than I & willing to help & offer advice to help others & to keep the hobby alive. Ive been collecting for nearly 25 years, & seriously for the last 4.
Its clear as day that there are some members that truly want to help others & offer great unbiased information to best of their ability & then there are others that just make me cringe when I read the garbage that they spew trying to either belittle or just discourage. it's sad, but it's real & from reading through these forums I'm not the only one feeling this way. So like I said it's my opinion as to what I feel as is your opinion that my comment was inappropriate. But either way thank you for your input.

In my opinion, most of the members here are friendly and helpful. You can count on me to just give my honest opinion on a question. I do not deliberately try to belittle anyone on the forums. If you post photos of the coin, I doubt anyone will be jealous or angry. In fact, without pictures, it is impossible to tell if your coin is a proof. So Thank you!

Here is a photo of the Breen plate coin used to ID the proof 1851 Half Cent. This coin was graded by PCGS PR65. The best identifying mark is a tiny struck-through line high on the cheekbone right of the eye, as struck. Q. David Bowers notes that there are 3 to 5 of these examples. I am still having a hard time understanding if there was only one set of dies used for the proofs and the business strikes. How is it known that these are proofs?

Proof refers to a method of production, that includes careful preparation of the dies. Dies would be specially polished to strike proof coins. Dies are not specifically proof or business strike and were difficult and expensive to make, so once sufficient proofs were struck, the dies were frequently used for business strikes. There was a period (and I don't remember the dates) where proofs were struck using the "Medal press" which used higher pressure to make the coins better struck. Proof were typically struck twice, which has the effect of squaring off the rims (you can see this in the above photo). Unfortunately most of the mint's records of the era were lost, so there aren't definitive records for each year of how many proofs were sold. What does exist is being photographed and is available through the Newman Numismatic Portal (NNP) at Washington University (St. Louis). In fact, a large amount of material was made available at the end of May 2018. https://www.archives.gov/research/g...ups/104.htmlhttps://nnp.wustl.edu/ https://www.fi.edu/history-resources/coin-press

I looked at PCGS current census report and the PR price guide and the 1851 Half Cent proof date is not even listed. There is nothing on Coin Facts about the 1851 proof Half Cent. Did PCGS pull certification of the 2 proof 1851 Half Cent coins that they had graded? NGC does not have any 1851 Half Cent proof coins certified.

That's some piece of commentary about this community. I kinda wish you would have kept that one to yourself. That having been said... Post a pic and stop the belly aching.
