id assume that alot of them probobly are in circulation, back in 2000 no one new that the variety even existed so I'm positive that many were spent and therefore are in circulation or in dusty boxes at the federal reserve

A new wrinkle to the situation recently popped up. General Mills included 5500 Sackies in 10 million boxes of Cheerios. An example sealed in original packaging was recently submitted to PCGS and they discovered that the coin did not have the enhanced detail tail feathers- it was a normal business strike! One can no longer assume that since they have a Sacagawea in Cheerios packaging, it is the more valuable 1999 reverse. A normal 2000P in packaging is just a regular Sacky, nothing more. Now, no one knows how rare these things actually are- were just a few replaced to complete the run or is the real number much smaller? More than likely, some have made it to circulation but many could also have been squirreled away in junk drawers and shoe boxes and will not see light light of day for years. Even if the entire run made it to circulation, the odds of finding one are infinitesimally small- 0.0000072% given a total of 767+ million 2000-Ps minted.

Hi,

Not much:-) Still, if I find a roll of small dollar coins that are not part of a box of Presidential dollars there are often sacs and SBAs in the rolls.

I've even found 1981 P D and S sacs and they were not minted for circulation. It would seem that hard times causes some of these to be rolled up and cashed in.

I can average a roll or two of sacs per week working with two banks (credit unions) here.

Some actually show signs of circulation wear so some must be in real use but they are few and far between. Most are just toned EF coins.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi,

I think it would also be possible that someone removes the Cheerios Sac and recreates the shrink wrap on the card insert, replacing a Good one with a normal 2000 P Sacagawea dollar.

Also, it has been known for awhile that not all "Cheerios Dollars" contained the "Reverse of 1999" coins as they came to be known. It's really nothing new to variety specialists although many collectors are not aware of this.

Here's a little more detail.
http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page20c.html

So watch out on ebay and other places as a coin in a Cheerios "wrapper" may not be that $10,000 wonder that everyone thinks it's supposed to be:-)

Thanks,
Bill

In my city some post offices, car-wash places, and downtown parking meters use dollar coins;

Thanks for calculating out the odd. But in reality, anything that has a probability of greater than zero will happen eventually. Just like Power bowl.

Yes, it will happen eventually. But the .0000072% figure tell you how many boxes you would have to search before you had a decent chance of finding one. If the entire mintage was dumped into circulation you could expect to find one in every 9,000 boxes you searched.

They also minted in 1999 20-25 22k gold they the mint claim they were melted all but the one that had flown on the space shuttle.

I bet there a few they melted were just a regular Sac. a few Gold ones is some mint officials or congressman collection or Bill Clinton may have one.
1 will pop up somewhere someday
