Brabant 1667 Ducaton of Charles II, Antwerp mint KM#79.1. As also mentioned by 1c5d in his post for 1671 with three nice pieces of Charles II, Charles was very young in these portraits. This type was designed and striking begun in 1665 when Charles was only 4 years old.   |

1667 two other jetons about the War of Devolution (1667-1668) Today we see the Spanish side of the story, the construction of a new fortified city in order to defend current Belgium against a French invasion. The new city (built in 1666 anticipating the imminent war) was called Charleroi (King Charles) and did not exist before, very unlike vitually all towns of Holland and Belgium which have medieval roots. Today it is one of the major cities of Wallonia, the French speaking part of Belgium. The two jetons (1667 Dugn.4237) picture the very young king Carolus II of Spain on the obverse and on the reverse the fortifications, on top (to the South) runs the Sambre river. The second is a recent "upgrade" of the first, better details of the geography.   below is a modern model of the situation in 1666: the city has large buildings probably the quarters of by a large garrison of the Spanish army  edit: forgotten to write that the legend surrounding the reverse holds an anagram of the date, look at the letters with a larger size: PROPVGNACVLVM PATRIAE DAT NOBIS MDCLVVVII = 1667 Edited by 1c5d7n5m

very nice tdziemia ! the chain of events triggering new events is wonderful below two more jetons of 1667 the first is one of my favorites Obverse: Archangel Michael defeating the devil, patron of the city of Brussels the legend DIVVS MICHAEL PATRONVS has the anagram to 1667 Reverse: Coat-of-arms of Peter Justus van Armstorff, treasurer of the city of Brussels  the second (Dugn.4244 vOrden1307) is from the supervisor of the channel connecting Brussels to the Scheldt river OBV: coat-of-arms of the family of Van der Haege. 16 67 REV: boat moved on by favorite winds, FAVSTVS AB HESPERIA SEMPER CAROLVS  |
