Christina was raised Lutheran, but even before her abdication (1654), had shown leanings toward Catholicism, and wound up living out the last two decades of her life as a guest of the popes in Rome. I think this religious image (Jesus as SALVATOR MVNDI, Savior of the World) is a bit unusual for Sweden, and wonder if it foretold her feelings on religion. The SALVATOR MVNDI motive was first used on coins by the first Vasa king (Gustav Vasa) in the 1540s and was used by all his successors up to and including Christina. Christina's grandfather, Charles IX, made extensive use of the name Jahve written in Hebrew and inscribed in a sun/star on his coins - a very un-Swedish motive seen with today's eyes! That symbol, although reduced in size, was also used by Christina's father, Gustav II Adolf - but not on Christina's coins as far as I am aware. I would say Christina's coins just continued what was by then traditional motives on Swedish coins. Christina could not let her growing fondness for catholicism show in any way, the law mandated that the monarch had to be of the "pure evangelical doctrine" as stated in the Augsburg Confession of 1530 (that is, she had to be lutheran). (In fact, the Swedish constitution still mandates this!) According to law, it was actually illegal for any Swedish subject to be a catholic - one was expelled from the country if found practicing catholicism (that law has been repealed by now... ). So when she decided to convert to catholicism, it was an immense scandal and a chock to society, and abdication was the only option. After Christina, neither the SALVATOR MVNDI motive nor any other religious references are found on Swedish coins (except the "DEI GRATIA" statement).
