@t360, thanks for the explanation on Besancon. This tradition echoes Aachen's use of that other Charles on their coins, though the reason is probably different.

Poland 1618 ort, Gdansk mint, type with flat collar (it's too bad a previous owner needed to clean a coin that was already in such nice condition).
Sigismund wears a ruffled lace collar on this type from its introduction in 1609 to 1615. Then from 1616 to 1621 he wears a flat collar, even while coins from the Krakow mint (3 kreuzer, trojak) still show him in a lace collar. Maybe Gdansk was having some trading issues with the country providing lace collars?
