It's Machine Doubling, since the devices are reduced in size and it's shelflike in appearance. Still a great example though!

Pretty LMC also found today. It has some wild colors in it. Like a oil slick on water.

What you have is classic MD or Machine Doubling. The dies are loose and so when they hit the coin there is n impression and smearing affect of the design. This is why the apparent doubling itself is very flat and, as is said here often, shelf-like. This type of doubling also reduces the thickness/size of the devices being doubled. An actual doubled die (the die making the coins in engraved with a double image) will not reduce the size, but make the size appear thicker since two legit images are being made side by side. MD is not uncommon and does not add value. Some people keep extreme examples just b/c the look cool. A true doubled die's duobling will also have a rounded characteristic like the actual devices do. Do a search on this forum for MD or " Machine Doubling" and you will find some great pics and discussion.

So why is it that only the date and mintmark are affected? Liberty, and in god we trust seems clear and normal.

Well, CRHing keeps you from playing in the street! MD can happen in multiple directions and have different effects all over the coin. I say it's like when a hammer hits a nail, it will bounce on the nail. It may not land in same place or angle the second (and third) time. This happens in coin making.

Oh, that makes sense. That was a very good analogy with the nail thing. Thanks for your input.

Cherry Pickers Guide. Meow just got it today. It says it worth $90 in ms65. But the one Meow found is far from that. Meow does not know what all the grades are called. Maybe its like a VF25, so the one Meow has is not worth much. Do you think the book is wrong, or Meow is not looking or understanding it right?

Meow looked again into todays penny pile and found another 1988 d Wide AM in a better condition. Maybe that was too easy, and Meow is wrong about this coin, and its value. If anyone could chime in on those wide AMs and narrow AM pennies; Meow would be grateful.

Wide AM's are normal for the 88'S. The Wide AM's you are looking for are the years 98, 99, and 2000. If you find one of those, you will have found the cats meow.

What you are thinking of is a 1988 D RDV-006 FS-901. ALL 1988's have a Wide AM. The one you want to look for are the ones that have the flared "G". What makes them special is some 1988's have the reverse of the 1989's. They are the ones that are valuable.
