Hi All, Now that Tom created the monster by showing me how to post pictures I thought I'd show you some of the nickels I've carved just so you can see all the different things that can be done with coin carving and how fun it is. As you can see, there is more to carving coins than just hobo nickels.  Wow...just wow! I have seen quite a few hobo nickels but never so many different types of designs like those  |

How in the....those are just really impressive. I like to consider myself artistically inclined, but I would just trash an old buffalo trying to do that. They are great!

Thanks. Well I think that if you are ever in Las Vegas that you should give me a call and I'll sit you down at the bench and show you some basics and you would not hack up nickels. It's a strange art form and very little written on how to carve, so muddling thru it is the norm and usually ends up defeating. Go look at Tom's nickels, he says he has no artistic ability, I said he's wrong and he came to Vegas to visit and I showed him some basics and look at how good he is doing now. I'm really proud of his progress and how much he is enjoying his new found artistic ability. My offer stands any time you come to Vegas. Just email me and I'll give you my phone number.

By the way for your information... I can't draw a lick..if I see it in my mind, I can carve it on a nickel but I can't draw it on a piece of paper.lol

My wife and I have been wanting to get out there for awhile now, but since we've just moved further east it's going to be hard right now, but I will certainly take you up on the offer if I ever find myself out that way!

Wow, great coins. You have some talent. Have you done work on other types of coins instead of Buffalo nickels? |

How long it takes depends on the carving and how many things my wife wants me to work on. I don't really watch the clock when I carve but a nickel can take from about an hour and up to 15 or 20 hours. Again it depends on the carving and detail.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked my nickels. I will review the selling rules but I'm not trying to sell any nickels...I'm just showing and talking about my art work. I don't really sell online just locally out of my shop in Vegas.

Hi Amazon99 and vermontensium, Thanks...I have carved other coins, half dollars, quarters, silver dollars, a Half Dime and an uncirculated 20 dollar gold piece so far but mostly I like carving nickels. I also do a lot with using gold inlay and setting gems in the nickels, using a color process I developed and nickels with moving parts. NGILES I forgot to answer the other part of your question, I use gravers to do the carving...they are basically little chisels used for metal. I make my own tools and shape them like I need them out of tool steel. |

I can't draw, I can't paint, I can't sculpt, but I can carve nickles. I can't explain why, but it is possible for a complete klutz to carve nickels. It takes some time and patience, but little more than a desire to make it happen. If I can do it, anyone in the world can do it. Mike has far more expertise than I, but I do some nice stuff myself, and it's not only nice to produce something collectible, it gives me a sense of pride that I've never had before. Do a Yahoo search for hobo nickels and you'll find our group. We'll help you learn to carve, and I assure you all that it's worth it!! Tom |
