I was at my brother-in-laws house and he showed me a stash of coins he inherited about 6 years ago. He has about 400 Indian Head cents in common dates and most in average condition. On quick perusal I didn't see any key dates or super condition coins. My question, what is the going price these days for Indian heads of common date and average condition? He may be willing to part with some of them and I would give him a fair price.

I found this table online somewhere and saved it. From the sounds of things the coins are not in great condition so this is a good starting point I think. Don't take my exact word for it though. There are lots of sites available to find a list of grades and their values. Hope this helps at least a little bit. http://coins.about.com/od/coinvalue...y-values.htmnot too sure I am allowed to post other websites on here. I hope so. malissa

It's a very rough guide but value mainly depends on rarity and grade of the coin. Got pics? Links are ok for established members

If the IHCs are around VG, those from 1887-09 (excepting S mint coins) are worth perhaps $1-4 each, 1880-86 generally worth twice that. Any IHC in the 1870s is worth a substantial premium--with 1877 the leader by far. Basically anything before 1880 can be worth a premium, and if the lot has a wide date spread, chances are that something good might be in there. Then there are the varieties, such as repunched dates and doubled dies. In 400 coins, you stand a good chance of finding a few, unless it was heavily sorted--such as the 1897 "1 in neck" variety. And, there are quite a few others with good value/collector interest.

Thanks folks, hat gives me a great starting point. I will give him a call and see about sitting down and having a good look see at the whole collection. Again, I think most are late 1890's and 1900's of g-vg grade from what I saw but with as many as he has there may be a gem or 2.

good luck to you. I love sitting down to sort through a bunch of coins and just seeing what there is. I really do hope you are lucky enough to find something rare or high grade.

"Again, I think most are late 1890's" You also have a good chance at another variety--the 1894/1894. That one also have good collector interest--and value.

If you have a bunch of IHCs, the best thing would be to get Rick Snow's attribution guides, as he's the expert on IHCs and his photos describe the varieties much better than I can.

Lower-grade common-date Indians in bulk lots typically sell for around $1 each.
I think that would be a very fair offer.

I had a fair "side deal" one time a couple/few years ago, that included IHC's......and they also were $1.00 each........I didn't have many at that time.....thought they were neat....and have since seen lower grade common dates go for that pretty regularly. So that'd be fair for you and fair for him IMHO. Unless as Kurt says you find varieties or pre 1880 then you'll need to affix a value to those individually for sure. If ya find any......post some pics up here for us to see !...
