I was wondering if the Wide AM type reverse is the normal reverse for proof (S) 1998 and 1999 lincolns. Also, not really a variety question and I am not an expert on newer proof sets, but wanted to know the difference between them. Say, the 98 or 99 lincolns I just mentioned. I looked at a few today and some were in red boxes and some in blue. One had the usual coins plus I think 5 or 6 State Quarters. One was marked mint proof set and the other just proof set. Sort of confusing.
Close AM is the norm for Business strike, Wide AM for the Proofs. The blue boxes contain the copper nickel clad coins, the red have the silver coins. On the Close AM the A and M in America are nearly touching, on Wide AM's they have a noticeable gap. Look at a couple proofs and a couple business strikes and you will see the difference. The experts can break down the wide and Close AM's for the earlier years, they do change things up once in awhile. You can find the Close AM cents in the 98 and 99 proof sets, not sure if any are found in the red box silver sets, still waiting for someone to speak up on that one- but I search them anyway just to be sure.
