Do you send payment first then he ships out the coin once he received the payment or does he ship out first then expect payment?

What kind of seller would ship first and expect payment later? They'd learn their lesson pretty fast.

Quote: What kind of seller would ship first and expect payment later? They'd learn their lesson pretty fast. Actually, believe or not, Frank has done this several times for me and, I have to assume, other repeat customers. I believe I have gotten coins a number of times from him before he would have had my mailed checks in hand, or at least have had time to cash them. A trusting soul, at least with reliable, repeat customers who have made some hefty purchases in the past.

I made my first and only purchase from him a few months ago; was sitting around waiting on an invoice, and the coin showed up in the mail! I just sent him the money via paypal.
He has a public wall of shame on his page, for whatever that's worth.

Frank definitely dances to the beat of his own drum. His quirkiness was on fine display last year in his hilarious emailed announcement about his sale 101:
"It is with inordinate pride and pleasure that I announce my landmark 101st auction of ancient and early coins, closing August 15. The sale boasts 558 lots, of superlative quality for the most discriminating connoisseurs. Enter the catalog and you will be transported on wings of angels into a veritable dreamworld of numismatic treasures.
Unlike most auctions which, let's face it, are full of overpriced junk, mine reflect unstinting efforts scouring the globe for the finest specimens; and yet the starting prices are so astonishingly low as to presage an orgy of bidding. Hence the wise participant will bid early to avoid being trampled.
The sale also includes group lots, literature, and an attractive selection of fixed price offerings. And while the emphasis is upon magnificent quality, there are some less exalted items (like an $8 Julia Titi) — crumbs tossed, so to speak, for proletarians."
Best auction announcement ever! (Which is why I never deleted it)

I haven't purchased anything from Frank in a long time but I recall being surprised when he sent the coins along with the invoice some 20 years ago.

He has sent me coins on preview and if I liked them send him the money if not send the coins back. Haven't had to send anything back.

I buy from Frank regularly, and for past number of years I got the coins with the invoice, and that even though I live in Canada. Everything is sent in a plain heavy cardboard envelope festooned with obsolete stamps. I pay with paypal, but there are other options. He does charge the paypal fees back to the customer, but if you consider how low his prices tend to be. The main problem is that his stuff tends to sell too rapidly. Frank is quirky, and he looks quirky, too ( met him at an ANA in 2012) , but I guess that goes with the territory.

Wow. I would never do this, but then I'm not on his par. I do see on his price-list page "established customers will be sent coins on approval", so there's that. I'll just back away quietly now...

@alpha2814, it could be that FR is an artefact of a bygone era or perhaps the numismatists most interested in medievals and ancients are a little closer knit and trusting as there are few of us in comparison with, for example, collectors of modern US error coins. I will say that he is not the only one who sends out my winnings before or contemporaneously with me mailing my check.

A retired Judge from New Yauk (internationally misspelled) you'll never find finer than Frank Robinson.
Has a great website and a few great books too.

I've bought from Frank multiple times ($XXXX) and paid first sometimes and got them shipped first others. Never a problem.

I have bought a number of coins from his auctions. I always get the invoice with the coins.
