Curious how many forum members are collecting the $50.00 Gold Buffalo each and every year ?
I'm sure it's few to none.....but I was wondering how many just might be......
I got two in 2006 the inaugrual year.....but that's it for me .....just got too expensive !

Also.....how many plan to get the new St. Gaudens high relief $20.00 1oz. gold coin next year?.......only minted in 2009 and they'll be no mintage limit on these.....here's the article....

Quote:
The United States Mint has chosen the nation's largest coin show in Baltimore, Md., this summer to unveil the much-anticipated 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle gold coin-a modern version of what many call the most beautiful gold piece ever created. United States Mint Director Ed Moy will participate in the Opening Ceremony of the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. and then officially open the United States Mint exhibit. The display at the United States Mint booth will show the development of this modern masterpiece-a one-ounce 24-karat (.9999 pure) gold Ultra High Relief Double Eagle.

Aided by advancements in technology, the United States Mint now can produce in quantity the ultra high relief coin envisioned, but never fully realized, by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in the early 20th century. The collectible coin will be about 50 percent thicker than other United States Mint one-ounce gold coins to achieve the greater depth and relief to which Saint-Gaudens aspired. Visitors will be able to feel the ultra high relief on a plaster of the coin that will be featured at the exhibit.

The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle gold coin exhibit will remain on display throughout the week at the United States Mint booth on the bourse floor at the World's Fair of Money.

The United States Mint will make these coins available for sale to the public in the beginning of 2009. There will be no mintage limit. The coins will only be sold in 2009. Like the original Double Eagles, the new coin will have a denomination of $20. The sales price will depend on prevailing world gold prices in 2009.

The price will, of course, be very expensive.....but this could really be one to have "maybe".....
How many will get one of these if it costs $1,450.00 per proof coin ?
What's the price range where you would get one ?

If I am going to buy gold, it will be 'OLD STUFF'. The price for a bullion coin and a common piece are not that much different. I'm into it for the beauty of the coin, as well as the investment.

Hey Eaglefoot,
I don't think your a 'Redneck'. I've known rednecks and 'hillbillies' for the past 40 years, and neither have collected coins.

I haven't been collecting the buffalo. I MIGHT buy the new St. Gaudens, but it depends if I like the design, the price of gold and if I haven't made any big purchases before hand.

I bought the UNC gold buffalo in 2006 and might buy a fractional this year. Other than that I can't afford 1oz gold anymore.

I bought the 2006 Proof $50, and have a subscription.....so I have a complete set of proofs. Wish they had a subscription plan for the $50 Eagle proofs. I'll probably buy at least one $20 high relief eagle.

The only way I'm ever going to own gold anytime soon is when the french start putting that minute amount of gold in their new euro pieces. (I forget which denomination but I would assume its the highest denom. coin)

But when they come out with the buffalo fractionals I may buy a 1/10 OZ. Thats all I can afford.

Ahhhh.....you're right, but I'm certainly related to some !

And yeah my two 2006's are "Proof" as well.....as are my gold Eagles.....sadly I haven't "invested" in "old gold" as of yet.
But once I have the new St. Gaudens.......I'll probably have to get the old ones too !
I understand the appreciation for "old gold" and the disinterest in "new gold".......but IMHO.....they're awful purrrrty too !...

I'd only pick up a modern Saint if I can't get the 1907 high-relief.
Popular design + unlimited mintage + near 100% survival rate + never will be circulated = no rarity premium.

The rising price of gold over the last few years is offering really nice "short term" premiums on new Moderns (gold) !
Nobody should get into the "predicting game" long term with the gold market.....they'd be a fool indeed, but a lot of people say that it'll NEVER drop below a certain amount ever again and could keep climbing "long term" for a long long long time to come......there'd be small hills and valleys in between, but in 30, 50, and 75 year chunks.....ever rising. That's what I'm hoping for !
Regardless......I wish I could have bought a 1907 IN 1907 !.....NOW "THAT" WOULD BE A PREMIUM MY FRIEND !........
But that'd mean I'd be about 101 years old at least....

I don't collect the Buffaloes. Way too expensive for me now. If gold was to drop back to around $400 an ounce before next year, I could possibly get one of the new Saints

I bought two Buffalo Coins in 06 & 07. This year I managed to aquire 28 rolls of Liberty Walkers & 25 rolls of Franklns halves from a retired friend. After that purchase I will have to pass the Buffalo coins up for this year.

I'll answer a question that may be asked now. No, out of the 28 rolls there were no 1921 Walkers in there.
