I sort mine by years, then check one year at a time. The quickest way to sort them I have found is as follows: Sort them by the last digit in the date first, 0 through 9. So you will have 10 different containers. Then sort each one of those by the decades. For example, take the container with dates that end in 1, and sort into 1971, 1981, 1991, etc. I like to sort and check by date because I can compare coins of the same year, so anything odd will jump out quicker. Plus you can go to coppercoins.com or doubleddie.com, and look up listings for each year and you can focus on areas to look for doubling.

Some will take 10 containers and put all the ones that end with 9 in one container. regardless of the prefex. Then place the same digit on into the other containers. Then sort them by years later. That way you can do them by year per container. I just go through them as they come. But others like to search by year/mint mark so they can look up information before searching.

First find somewhere on the floor where you can dump the coins. Start with putting all the same dates together from earliest to most recent. Then take a break.
Once you feel re-charged, get your coin catalog book out and sit back down. Start with the earliest or most recent dates and organize your coins from nicest looking to the ones that look like they have been through heck.
Take another break and repress the thoughts that are going through your head (What am I doing)
Get a piece paper or excel sheet and write or enter the grades and value. When you do it again, you will have the info ready to reference faster.
Hope that helps

PM me, I'll send you printable copies of layout sheets. I have them for LWC, LMC, Jefferson nickels. I stack each coin by date, if stacks get too high just set some aside on you own marked sheet. Then you can check each individual stack per date, with references pulled up, don't have to shuffle around.

Oh oh, Meow has been doing the CRH wrong. Meow just studies each coin well regardless of date, and has never presorted before. Is this where Meow has gone wrong?

Quote: Is this where Meow has gone wrong? No I have never pre sorted. Once I have learned what to look for I just go through them, rolled or loose and look for errors and varieties. I also look for high grade ones. This works with all denominations as well. John1

Figure its best to give every coin a chance regardless of date to add to the Cat hoard. Meow has CRH every day since starting about a month ago. Meow has not found any amazing gems yet, buy enjoys CRH inmmensly. Off the top of Meow's furry head, Meow recalls finding so far: 2 Silver Nickels 1 Buffalo 2 RPMs 1 silver dime Strangely only one gem BU dime. 2 2009 nickels And many interesting examples of die wear, die cracks, die clashes, and Machine Doubling.

If you have kids or grandkids, give them each $5 and a pair of cotton gloves to separate them by date...

Don't worry about grading them. I thought you were looking for varieties.

There is no "correct" way to roll search coins. The reason I date sorted halves when was b/c, with little experience in errors, I was looking for DDOs, DDRs, RPMs, clashes, die rotations, No FG et cetera. If, for example, I was looking through a stack of 1971-D halves, as each one got under the microscope it was easy to fall into a routine of looking for the clashed OBV, RPM, DDO, and rotated die. If I was searching at random, I might forget to look for each error. After awhile, and after seeing a lot of the errors firsthand, you gain more confidence and likely will be less prone to overlook errors. Sorting, using a written list of errors for each date/MM and making a routine was an easy way to train myself to be thorough.
