New to coins, and wanted opinions. Is it real, or counterfeit? I have attached pics. Thank you all for your help, and valuable time. Jason Edited by Jason Alan 08/07/2018 03:08 am

That's not an O that's a D for Dahlonega. Looks real to me but I'm no expert with gold . If it's real it's worth quite a bit. Hopefully indiangoldeagle will see this, he's pretty sharp.

Not Genuine. The "D" does not match the type or position used for this date. Open 10 different auctions of 1852 D gold dollars on Heritage and you will see. The date is also not correct. The numeral 8 is much too large.

IMO there's a reasonable chance that's it's real. If so, you've got a goodie (~$2K). When those that know take a look they'll want better pictures.

Jason- Sorry to say yours is counterfeit. Whenever you want to see if a coin is counterfeit, just do a side by side comparison with a genuine coin. As you can see, as previously mentioned, the MM is wrong and the 8 is too high. Also if you look at the style of the 5, they are different. I have also found on these counterfeits that some of the berries have no stem although that is hard to see on your photo.

Looks like a fake to me, unfortunately.

I agree. While the obverse is rather well done, the reverse is an easy fake to spot.

It does seem to be counterfeit. A good conversation piece or placeholder if you plan on getting the real deal. A Dahlonega mint gold coin would be a very nice coin for any collection in my mind.

There are probably more fake one dollar gold coins out in coinland than there are real ones. That's sad, but a reality in the world we live in today.

The rim looks odd. I would lean more towards fake.

I remember this coin. It was an auction on ebay. Date and MM are very wrong, it is a fake.

Date and mintmark are biggest the biggest giveaway that the coin is bogus.

That obverse strike is screwed.

Lots of negative replies and none for a real coin so sounds like not to good. Have you weighed it?
