Since 2012, toonies have edge lettering that is either upright or upset relative to the obverse.

Do you consider these as two different coins, such that you collect the same coin with both edge lettering orientations?

I have been collecting both, but am starting to feel this is extreme.

Most would consider this unnecessary, but if it gives you collecting satisfaction, don't stop.

The US has the same thing with Native American and Presidential dollars. They call it "Position A" and "Position B."

I don't think I would go that far, personally, to require one of each, but it is completely up to you. Your coins, your style!

If you put the coin in an album the edge lettering would not matter.

For the US dollars I have argued that the mint mark no longer matters to album collectors when it moved to the edge.

If you store your coins in a way that allows you to review the edge and you enjoy the additional challenge, then by all means collect both variants!

Since there is no right or wrong way to collect, it sounds as if your desire and fun in finding the different types is waning. So its all up to you.

My friends that collect twoonies insist upon having both positions.

From what I understand in the coining of the US Presidential dollars and UK 1 and 2 pound couns, the orientation of the coin (obverse up vs. reverse up) is random when the edge lettering is applied so while the difference exists, the distribution should ideally be 50/50 and there is no real varietal premium. The Canadian twoonie method is the same and presumably the distribution also.

As always, what you collect and how you structure your collection is up to your passion. Personally, I have often kicked myself for decisions where I have limited inclusion in a "set" for reasons of temporary convenience and then decided later to fill in the blanks because at heart I am a completionist and gaps tweak my OCD... It can be difficult or expensive to backfill when coins are no longer current.

It makes sense for those who want to build a fully complete set.

Thanks all for your input. I think I'll continue collecting both orientations.

@vonigohcr - your post really resonates with me. I tend to be OCD about these things too and am sure I'd regret getting rid of the doubles.

Oh yes, I collect both, still looking for the 2nd version of the 2018. You call yourself "extreme", aren't all coin collectors a little extreme in some way. . Nothing wrong with that.
