*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

As I was roll searching I came across this 1974 Kennedy and
I was thinking who would do this to a coin.
Then I found another 74 Kennedy, then a third and fourth.
Ended up with 16 and some with a lesser degree of damaged.
Could this have happened in the minting of the coins?
Thanks for any feed back.

They are a Struck Through Grease issue on them. The deeper part of the die had a Grease Fill and it prevents the design from striking up. All are just struck through errors. They look like it pretty common on them if you found that many so far.

Did you know that 64 half dollars are worth $32? (before you get real excited about this, do the math. LOL)

Thanks, that make sense. You can see the area affected becomes less and less. The grease must be dispelled as minting continues.
Thanks again.

Sometimes it has to be cleaned out. Other times it transfers a bit more on each strike to the new coin. But most of the time the grease will be clear in color. You see if on the coin and it makes it look like the area is raised:

My coins have a deep impression as if hit with a hammer. Will grease do this?

The op's coins are 1974 not 1964.

It is common to see this as prevented from forming the normal way. The grease blocks the shape. Leaving the valley.

I didn't say they 1964. LOL Read it again.

Sorry. It's an old joke. From the 60's era.

I added it this time, but you should include the date, mintmark, and the denomination in your titles.

They are greasers, not PMD.
