This 1971 Lincoln Penny has a completely Missing "L" in Liberty. How can this happen? Thank you.

Looks like it was caused by a Struck Through Grease issue. It's a legitimate Mint error actually. http://www.error-ref.com/struck-thr...-grease-oil/

Thanks for your reply. That is very interesting. I wonder if that may be the cause of the "FG" being so faint on the Reverse.

Could be, although this coin has some normal wear and tear as well.

Spence, with normal wear and tear wouldn't you expect to see some of the other letters in "IBERTY" worn? That was the interesting thing to me is that the remaining letter all stand out in good condition.

Yes, you are right that in an ideal world, all letters would wear equally fast, but in actuality, the hits and dings come randomly and some parts of the design sometimes disappear a little before others. In the specific case of the letter F on the rev of your cent, I don't see any damage to the field where the top of this letter should be, so yes most likely grease was in the die there. I guess that the point I was making is that not all "missing" letters are from grease-filled dies.

Or that area may have received a very heavy polishing? Note how the devices are weak on LIBERTY and gets smaller sized of devices before the'L' went away. Either way no premium for this.
