I am sorry to hear about all the losses mentioned here. I can imagine why someone would want to give up on coin collecting after something like this happens. But I would also like to think I'd give it a go again. And when it's family or trusted friends it's more devastating.

I will probably start again, but I think I am going after slabbed this time. At least if I try to sell them, it is a little bigger holder and not as easy to hide. I don't know yet what I am going to do.

I think you should notify the dealers in the area and put out an inventory sheet with them, at least some of the main shops and pawn shops. It does work -- my dealer busted a lowlife.
Sorry to hear of your loss -- many of us here have suffered the same.

Nothing worse than someone who does this. What about security cameras in the area?

Getting them slabbed won't do much because most likely they're crack them out. I would suggest into getting a descent camera and picturing your coins because that would be the best way to identify them.

You could get a "fake" security camera too.....they even have red blinking L.E.D. lights on them......mount it in an obvious place. Put a sign on the front door that says "Security Camera in Use". They sell these in the range of $45.00 in the back of Construction Magazines and other places.....and could work wonders for prevention!
If you can't afford a nice alarm system, ask a friend who does have one to order you some stickers....ADT for example. Being a customer, ADT will mail him some stickers and then you can put those up on the windows and door.
To think too that, likely, it was a "customer" who came in to scope out the store during business hours to see what was there to steal later.......he probably even asked about the coins and you may have even showed them to him. You certainly will need to take all the security measures you can in the future....coins or no coins......and this can be done cheaply with "smoke and mirrors" if you can't afford the real stuff, with a couple of things I've mentioned here !

Sorry to hear of your loss. We had a similar incident. I can feel your pain with the police. We actually found some of our items(gold necklaces) at a store. Informed police and all we got out was those items back. The store got nothing even thou a young man sold the items to them. Really frustrating when ya get so close and police do not follow up. We got alarm system. I suggest that as an option. They are relatively cheap and allow you to put out signs. Best of luck in the future.

Kerry67,
Sorry to hear of your loss through some scum stealing the lot.
If I was a collector of such US $1 coins, I would gladly send you a spare Morgan or Peace if I had some to help you along and show there is some good in the world. But alas, I don't have any. Have you thought of collecting Australian dollar coins :-)
My best wishes to you and your wife and I truly hope you get at least some of them back or there are members here that will keep an eye out or help you out. Perhaps you can post a list of what was taken.

I actually had a fake camera with the light in my booth as well as a sign on my cabinet that said "Smile you are on Camera". The person broke a big steel brace and then yanked the door off and then stole the locks so he could get the door back on quickly. They actually left a few higer price walking Liberty & Seated Liberty halves as well as some very nice antique pocket watches.

Oh, I went back last night a reinforced a big display that my wife has a lot of jewelry in. Now you need a sawz-all or a welding torch to get into that case. I will do what ever it takes to prevent this from happening again. All in all they took 32 Coins and a 1899 Black Eagle dollar bill. The mall is giving me a huge glass showcase that is virtually burgler proof for 6 months for free. I think they are afraid I am going to pull out of the mall. It is not their fault I got robbed but there are some things they could do to make it harder for things like this to happen.

The mall was open. It is a large place. They probably went in and had a few people tie up the floor staff at the other side of the store and then they broke into the case.

It is their fault. You trusted them to provide security and they failed you miserably.
