Lincoln Memorial Cents (1959-2008):
1) 1970-S small S
2) 1979-S type II proof
3) 1981-S type II proof
4) 1995 DDO
5) 2000 Wide AM, reverse from proof Die

Jefferson Nickels (1938-2003):
1) 1970-S Mint State
2) 1994-P Special Matte Finish
3) 1997-P Special Matte Finish

Washington Quarters (clad,1965-1998):
1) 1983-P

Eisenhower Dollars (1971-1978):
1) 1972 Modified High Relief
2) 1973-S

Susan B. Anthony Dollars (1979-1981 & 1999):
1) 1979-P Near Date
2) 1979-S Proof Type II
3) 1981-S Proof Type II

Sacagawea Dollars, Eagle In Flight Reverse (2000-2008):

1) 2000-D Millennium Set Dollar

What do you think. Is this a good starting point for a collection of moderns? I would've included the 1982 no mint mark Roosevelt dime, but Roosevelt dimes aren't obsolete.

I have more knowledge and interest in the Washington quarters than the other series, so I'll just comment on those. I would consider expanding your list to include 1982 and 1983 both P and D.

Edited for grammar.

On adding the quarters.

Curious why the 1970 S mint state nickel ?
I think I would add the 1939 D, 1942 D and the 1950 D nickel.

Which 1973 S Ike?

With the Kennedy half dollars being NIFC now ... maybe add the 1998 S matte proof.

Personally, I don't get the hype on SBA 1981 ty II since the price is way higher than I would pay.
The difference in the TY I and TY II mintmarks are not worth it to me. I'd settle for a wide rim 1979 P and get a 1973 in Unc, Silver Unc, Proof and Silver Proof.
I am guessing that the 1970 S on your want list is because it was the last S minted nickel intended for circulation.
I would try to cherry pick a nice one with at least a 4 step reverse as they are quite difficult to find well struck.

I agree with TNG on the 1981 S ty II SBA. It is the only SBA that I don't
have in my Dansco album. I think you can buy all the other SBA's for
the price of the 81 S ty II.

@TNG. So you think the '81-S type II SBA dollar is overhyped? Do you think it's one of those varieties that a lot of people are in possession and don't realize what they have, but if they realized what they had, they'd try to sell them and the population of them in the market would skyrocket and the price would plummet? Or do you think the rarity level is pretty well documented but it's just overpriced for what it is?
Yes I want the circulation strike 1970-S Nickel. I thought about full step strike, and I'll look for one, but will only add it if it doesn't cost a substantial premium over a normal strike specimen.

@GR58. I didn't add those earlier Jefferson nickels because I'm trying to keep the list to 1965 or later.
Which 1973-S Ike? The proof one.
I do want to add Kennedy halves to my collection. But it doesn't pertain to this list, because it's not an obsolete design.

They seem like very viable and legitimate choices for your collection. Nothing for the 82/83 changeover for the LMC?

You need more Ikes.

Or at least five total... Business strikes in clad and 40% silver, proofs in clad and 40% silver, bicentennial (of course, they also come in those four ways and in two major varieties for the clad).

For 1973 S Ike's, there two proofs.
A clad S mint proof
A 40% silver S mint proof

I am guessing you want the brown box silver proof

That would be the 40% silver proof.

I chose the '73-S silver clad proof because of the price difference compared to other coins in the series. I'm used to classic coins, were it's recommended that you buy the key date coins first. Then again the price guide I looked at is a couple of years old. So maybe the value has dropped since then. The only key date classic coin I have is an 1897-S Barber quarter in G-4, because most classic series key dates are way out of my reach price wise.
Rest in Peace

Why just certain easily found WAM 2000? Whjat about the harder 1998 and near impossible 1999 WAMS....or let's get into all the other varieties, 1999S-PF LMC CAM? There are TONS of varieties , cost a bundle, but if you go for the 1995 DDO LMC, shoot for the 1969S DDO, and the big guns, 1972 DDO-001?

Your pursuit of this mish-mash of variety/error(transitional) is flawed to begin with. Just collect what tickles your fancy, it is your collection! I'd add probably 100-200 different major varieties for all those you listed which is either quite unrealistic or very optimistic! Good Luck!

I suppose finding a sealed gem 81 proof set with all having the ty 2 S would be interesting and quite rare. Or it might be fun putting together a slabbed set of PF69's.
The 79 ty 1 and 2 make a little more sense to me and are clearly different mint marks but there is so little significant difference in the 81 S mintmark that I just don't get it.
The prices are outrageous IMO and I just couldn't justify buying a 1981 SBA ty 2 for around 75 bucks and up.
So many times I see posts on this forum where people are asking whether it is a ty 1 or 2 mintmark on the 81 S proof singles. That's a lot of money for something that requires such scrutiny.

To me it never made much difference, but I will admit, my Jefferson nickel set has both the 1981 proofs. LOL

It is up to you of course but you asked for our opinions. If that's what you want, then by all means I'd say go for it. $75.00 could be spent elsewhere too, like on those big honkin 1973 IKES. ( haha jbuckster! )

In my honest opinion, I think you have a good list. It's a good way to start out.
