Looked unusual so nabbed it from local coin store—it really doesn't look like a scratch but more like filled in or something—any ideas-thanks

Can you post the reverse. It has the look of a fake.

Perhaps not a fake. It's VLDS for sure with multiple large die cracks. Has MD and some light tarnish. Not worth a large premium but the large crack may add value to a specific group of collectors.

If it is a fake that is a different subject. To answer your question that would be a "Die crack" - the die (wether fake or real) had a crack in it before it struck your coin.

Die breaks.

The Philly mint made a boat load of 22 Peace dollars and dies were used to the max to make them.

But I doubt the Philly mint made any with a D mintmark.

Also looks like a die crack on the reverse about same area as obverse one is—are these considered significant die breaks/cracks—what would you say the grade of this coin is?—thanks for the input

It's genuine and a VAM 2O2 (Two 'O' two). An I-3 R-6 coin.

Imag8r, [CAUTION! The Surgeon General has determined that Vamming is addicting]. Now that you've been properly warned, visit the section just above this one. It contains a complete description of what is a VAM. You are correct that it is named after the two pioneers of the process, Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis. These two set out years ago to catalog the die marriages for Morgan and Peace dollars. A VAM is the catalog number for the die marriage, not the specific pick-up points (PUPS) you see on the coin. There is a wealth of knowledge on VamWorld. The I-3/R-6 means a collector interest of 3 out of 5 and a rarity of 6 out of 8. Good luck.

Those are called Die Cracks. They were quite common on the Peace dollars. For future reference, please don't hold coins in your hand. That's how fingerprints get onto coins surfaces permanently (it will decrease the coins value). Only hold it by the rim, or wear gloves when handling it.
