Sometimes I wonder if the original cellophane packaging is safe for long term storage?

Looks like the cellophane surrounding the nickel was damaged and that exposure led to the colorful toning.

I recently bought a 1964 proof set. The auction outfit sent me a sealed envelope. Upon opening I found the quarter and half to be an evenly turned rust-brown. the divider crimping had sealed over the two, with those micro holes, the sulfur from the yellow envelope did it's thing. I got a replacement, but the house said most people liked getting a sealed one...never again for me!

I didn't trust the cello packs back then. I moved them into display boxes with airtites. This is my 1956 Set.

Quote: but the nickel was really a neon pink, blue and, green, I never seen a nickel tone that color before I have one that is quite similar...

Took all of my late 50's- 64 proof sets out of the cello packs, put them in airtites and into airtite tubes just to maintain some of the color that some of them have and the ones that don't have color stay the same....
I know a lot love the tarnish, and myself don't mind it to a certain point, but if not contained/stopped it will eventually get pretty ugly.

I would be furious to pay good money to get a set like that. I'm to the point I want to see actual pictures and not stock photos.

Ya, darn thing was about my nasty set was the disme and nickel were actually a fairly high grade...sent them back! Wonder who the losers were who wound up with a "toned" Quarter or Half!
