Recently I am looking for Morgan dollars to complete a collection that my dad started about 60 years ago. I've filled a couple gaps through ebay after carefully comparing many photos and prices. Photo quality varies so much and it seems opinions about price/condition are helter skelter. Can someone recommend a fair or trustworthy dealer or two, I'm not experienced enough to be comfortable sorting through all the variables on ebay. Thanks! Bill

@Fuzzy That appears to be a post you made before you became a Mod. Those are the best. @Stewillard I can recommend a couple honest sellers on ebay. The first is Dave: 142893339328 as an example. The second is JT: 392104682481He doesn't have anything for Morgans, though.

It sounds as though you are down to key and semi-key dates. I would recommend Great Collections and Heritage Auctions although I have not used HA recently. Most if not nearly all listings for the key/ semi-key date Morgans will be BIN with scattered OBO on ebay and some dealers tend to be a bit proud especially if there is toning involved. I would stick to PCGS and NGC certified coins in this area and be prepared to pay a premium if you find a CAC'd example you like. and to CCF!

My two favorites are Brian Greer and Larry Briggs, but they're best at Seated coins. For cc's brokencc.com

I suggest you look up coin shows in your area. Buying anything on line is just taking a chance. Go to a coin show or more and you'll have several or more dealers to pick from. Also, you can see what your buying.

Thanks for the recommendations.
I'm sure my Morgan collection is missing key dates plus more common coins. The coins I've added filled the earliest gaps but I'm sure it would be beneficial to search using the complete list of fugitives.
For jst1dreamr, I'll add the list later.
Thanks again!
Bill

Good day! Getting a feel for the place so I've been reading various threads. This one caught my eye. I recently re-interested myself in continuing my collections. I found ebay listings by chance, and that helped spark my interest again. Like some of you on here, I find the pricing and the coin grading spastic on ebay. I rarely participate in the auctions as those seem to go way above the price guide I am using. So here are a few questions you might be able to help with to steer my path through this modern world. Coin prices - mainly coinstudy.com but have used 2 others that escape me at the moment. Older ebay auctions... Coin purchases - Only from ebay so far. Coin information - what led me to this place. Coin collection - I am not interested in coin collecting as an investment. It's a hobby, and I like having that piece of American history. But I'm also not looking for wore out silhouettes and un-readable dates and mint marks. Right now I am trying to complete a Buffalo nickel collection, and Indian penny collection, about to finish up a Wheat penny collection. I already have the normal collections of State and National Treasure quarters and Presidential dollars. Looking to finish a Sacagewa Dollar collection. These were basically really easy, as I am getting bank rolls when they are available, and AU circulated pocket change when I pick them out. Someday I wish to have a Mercury dime collection. Several others as well, but I'll temper that with patience and pocketbook. The Buffalo nickel collection is where I see the most dramatic opinions on condition and price. I am only interested in clear dates and mint marks, along with the best detail with features.

Northern Nevada Coin has always been my go-to for top-end Morgans, on the rare occasions I can afford one... You can google "BrokenCC" to find their website. If you like toners, check out Todd @ BluCC (google) -- he does attend shows, and has a LOT of jaw-droppingly beautiful Morgans for sale directly on his site, but he is perhaps most famous for his photography of prooflike/deep mirror prooflike coins, which can be very tricky to accurately photograph. I spent some time just chatting him up about Morgans and Toners and his favorite DMPL's he's ever come across a couple of years ago at an ANA show and he was very gracious both with his time and knowledge; I acquired a couple of nice toners from him at the show as well.

My goal in collecting is very much like that of that of JrFuel, see above. Nice detail without obvious damage or unsightly scratches are my goal. I'm already learning how to recognise cleaned and polished coins and I'm not interested in badly worn coins just like I'm not particularly interested in the more expensive graded coins. There are always exceptions e.g. the rarer coins where I might go either way. For better or worse, graded coins will fit my Whitman albums . Bottom line, I'll take my time and carefully put together respectable collections. I'm thinking many collectors here collect like this. I like the look of "toners" but I haven't learned much about them. I'm hoping to learn more about them here. I look forward to an upcoming Tulsa coin show. I'm sorry I live in the sticks where access to coin shows is limited. I'm thinking shopping the shows have some big advantages over most ebay and coin shops. I appreciate all the suggestions and advice. This forum is super helpful. Bill
