Unknown-Possibly-From-Bologna-With-Pope-Leo-X-Image.-Coin-Or-Medal?

here we have an item, but I do not know if it is a coin or a medal. I cannot find a match in numista. The lack of year or denomination makes me think medal.

Weight is 3.75 grams. Diameter 27 mm

Here are the inscriptions:

Heads: Leo X ponifex maximus (Note leo ruled from 1475-1521)
tails: Bononia mater studiorum

The tails legend seems to be from Bologna.

One way or the other, I would be interested in any reference numbers and particularly a valuation as it is not my item and I may want to get it.

Interesting coin, Leo X was born in 1475, he was Pope from 1513-1521 so that narrows down the date a bit.

Yes, a coin. There seems to be some question of denomination - mezzo (1/2) bianco or 1 leone?. Berman 692.

Found it!

https://www.coingallery.de/KarlV/Papa_E.htm#03

(3rd coin down) Here is the text:

Quote:
Mezzo bianco (?), Bologna. Ø 27 mm, 3,55 g. CNI X p.74 n.21; Muntoni 111; Berman 692.
This coin is too light to be a Bianco.
Obv.: LEO·X·PONTIFEX·MΛXIMVS· - tonsured bust right.
Rev.: BONONIΛ·MΛTER·STVDIORVM - rising lion with fluttering flag stepes left,
At the edge the coat of arms of Cardinal Giulio de Medici with cardinal's hat above.

Oddly, it isn't in my Biaggi so I had already typed up a smarmy reply that unless someone is sitting on a copy of the 20 volume CNI, then we must conclude that it isn't a coin. Interestingly, the text above even calls into some doubt that it'd weight makes its use as coin suspect. For this time period and part of the world, coins were not routinely dated and many didn't have specific inscriptions with the denomination.

Added:

Looks like they pop up at auction from time to time:

Some seem to be selling for a bit of money so maybe jump on this sooner rather than later?

Thanks, guys:

That was really quick! However, given the prices realized, I will have to let this go to someone else, as this is not my main collecting field.

I can think of only one Italian coin I have (including Papal States) before late 18th century that bears a denomination (a Venice 40 soldi). But same goes for plenty of other places. We have plenty of discussions out here on appearance of dates on coins, less about denomination. Never thought much about it.
