I agree with @john1--a nice example, but not enough of the design missing to command much of a premium.

Another error. It's a CENT, not a penny.

Quote: It's a CENT, not a penny. Guess what kanga, it doesn't matter what you call it! Both terms are correct. You need to stop saying this, because it doesn't make you look too friendly to new members. Anyways to answer the OP's question, it was Struck Through Grease, but not enough to command a premium over face value. http://www.error-ref.com/struck-thr...-grease-oil/

You can call it a penny as "long as you know it is really a cent". John1

I agree, this cent v. penny thing is ridiculous and off-putting to new members. While the mint uses the term cent, the word penny is more often used in everyday language and even by the makers of paper coin tubes. Just this morning I was paying for $19.02 worth of groceries with a $20 bill and the clerk asked me if I had a couple of pennies.

Yeah, just another degradation of the American language. I really believe our fumbling fathers in Congress in 1791 made real sure the word "Penny" was NOT used on the smallest denominations of US coinage. Reason being...duh... Revolutionary War! England loved the Penny, even a Half Penny, but in extreme "rebellion" the Colonists rejected all things British. Quote:Quote: Quote: It's a CENT, not a penny. And yeah, Kanga, the grammar/PC corrections are getting old, both you and I have had posts whacked for it!

The coin is reprocessed, so that ruins the value for it to a collector. The Rubes will buy them. But the coin was altered with the plating. Steel cents shouldn't shine:
