Ok lets take this from the beginning . First of all To CCF . How did you acquire the bag of cents ? Are they all wheats or Memorials ? A photo of what you have will tell us a lot and give you proper evaluation .

My Best suggestion is to buy The Mega Red Coin Book Volume # 2
Always buy The Book 1st.
Good Luck on your Search and Hope to hear from you on your Success

I am curious why you think you have some very valuable coins. What are you seeing?

You could go on line to find a list of coins. For example the PCGS site has such a list. Many other sites too. You might want to look up a place to find a copy of the Red Book by Whitman Publishing. Great information on all coins.

Yes coin books are helpful but pull all of your 1983 cents out and weigh them cause in 1982 they changed the composition of the coins, so if your cent weight is of the older copper cents (pre 1982) you will have found a valuable coin. (weight for a copper cent should be 3.1grams as opposed to 2.5 grams for coins 1982 on). Also I would like to recommend a book that I use regularly....Strike it Rich with pocket change by Ken Potter and Dr. Brian Allen 3rd Edition. I sure by now they have a later addition.

I like that book too. I picked up the 4th edition a few weeks ago, I see the 5th addition is on Amazon.

I'd sort by decade and then go through each decade in more detail. It allows you to focus more.

My method is first to identify and attempt a grade of all key coins to the set. Then look for errors and/or variations to possibly increase the value of what might seem common dates. Finally separate All coins with mintmarks (S and D) then find a reliable price guide and look them all up. Heck there are only around 200 or so wheats total but locating and attributing errors and varieties can become quite time consuming but the payoff can be large. Reference http://www.error-ref.com/ and http://koinpro.tripod.com/ErrorVarietyList.htm to get started on the oddities and good luck with your hunt. I find sorting quite relaxing then when the 1917 DDO appears its kinda like Christmas Day!

If you have some divided trays (ice cube) or empty egg cartons, these make great sorters.
