My wife, daughter, and I were looking at our old coins. We are not collectors but have a few odd, silver, indian head, wheat, etc. I have a 1943 zinc penny, not rare I know, but what is odd and I need an answer to is my wife has what appears to be a 1945 zinc penny. I know that is not supposed to exist, but I swear it is not copper. Can someone shed some light on this for us? Thank you. Kevin.

Can you post pictures of this coin? and possibly its weight?

Here is the tutorial about uploading and posting images

And here is the CCF Free Image Optimizer to help crop your images. And please preview your post/pictures to be sure the images are rotated correctly.

to the funny farm!

That is most likely a plated coin. Nickel and zinc were used in High School science classes and now in YouTube videos. It may be slightly magnetic, the zinc plated steelies(1943's) will jump to a magnet, nickel has a slight magnetic pull.

I have found coins plated with "Goldtone"(on watches), brass Mercury, even silver and 24kt gold! Why is beyond me? Birthyear perhaps?

I can see if I can send some pictures. We don't have a gram scale yet to get a weight. It has no magnetism at all, my 1943 hits a magnet hard. Is there something we can put on it to see if it is plated? That's probably the most realistic answer.

#kc, first welcome to CCF. Second, please post pics of your coin--that would help. However, the best diagnostic will probably be the weight. Also, remember that the cents in 1943 were made from steel--that is why they are attracted to a magnet. Zinc cents weren't a thing in the US until 1982.

Without pics and a weight, I must agree with Crazyb0 that it is most likely plated.

Not being magnetic rules out a stray '43 planchet (or coin) being used.

As already noted more than likely plated by someone. Usually kids in schools do that.
