All US currency error coins can theoretically be found in circulation since it's theoretically possible that someone could have acquired any given error at one point in time and then put it back in circulation at some later date. However, my guess is you really want to know what are the most common error coins found in circulation today that you should be on the lookout for. For that I would recommend a book by Brian Allen and Ken Potter called, "Strike it Rich With Pocket Change - How to Find Error Coins in Circulation".

Here's a link to info on it: http://coins.about.com/od/errorcoin..._it_rich.htm

Are you referring to true errors(off center, incomplete planchet, split clad layer, brockages, etc) or die varieties(doubled dies, RPMs, OMMs, etc)? I ask because a true error is definitely not easy to find, especially with new Mint procedures in place to stop their release. Most people commonly refer to die varieties as errors though and those can be found because they are not so obvious as the true errors.

Hi,
At the bottom of my post, you will find a link to my site. You can see what is possible to find in circulation and in rolls of coins that you simply get from a bank.

All kinds of errors and die varieties can be found if you look for them. It takes time but many good collectible coins are found in rolls.

Have Fun,

Probably the most common error to be found in circulation, especially modern coins, would probably be the die crack or slightly off-center (2-5% OC). These would be so insignificant (OC) or small (DC), I doubt they would carry any dollar value, just collector value.

Hi,

I am not sure if you mean mis-aligned die strikes. 2 to 5 percent is about the range one would expect to see on misaligned die strikes and not off center struck coinage. ....Two different things....You don't find off center struck coinage very often, but you do find them now and then. You are more likely to find coins struck on incomplete planchets than you are to find Off center struck coins.

Thanks,
Bill

Noah123: I like to think any coin that isn't right is an error coin. I even like machine doubled coins and have made
up six sets of Lincoln Mach Dbld over last 10 years. Of course, I'm odd too. I call doubled dies errors even though
they are varieties instead. I also have a different coin
collector's dictionary, too. My favorite motto is "keep
searching" and you will be holding out stuff that isn't normal
and then you will gain experience and knowledge over time and
see some books and articles and email fellow collectors, watch the forums, then "WAH-LAH!", your lightbulb will light
up and you will tell the difference. Since I am into cents,
to me they only cost a penny and that's cheap! Please stick
with it. My home environment allows me to do this, I am
fortunate. I'm 62, my wife builds quilts in one room, I search pennies in another. Life here at home is great.
